unique AI commanders

something i would like to see in bannerlord or atleast in a mod is for different AI lords to use different tactics and have unique ways of war. for example, there may be a commander that prefers to lead the charge with his men, while others are more of tacticians and prefer to stand back and command from a distance, there could be commanders specialized in defensive battles while others prefer offensive. there could also be unique formations that a lord uses when battling and much more that could make AI lords renown for the way they lead. let me know what you think, personally i think it could add so much more life to the game.

Not sure what this formation is called but it counters everything from archers to cavalry. Unique lords or companions with perks for special formations would make the gameplay better imo.

I would like the ability for companions to control unit types in your armies as well. Give half your infantry to one companion to control and all your archers to another so they act like commanders for their mini partitioned army within your army. Maybe then you'd only have to control the cavalry.

Programming smart AI commander companions will take some effort though, especially when you have to program them to have chemistry and work in sync. Or perhaps certain companions just don't get along or need to win a few battles before they learn to work together. If devs or modders can program that into the game it'd be something.

pretty sure that's just a shield wall. and yes what you said would be interesting too

Naw man. The front line units are crouched while there is a backline with shields protecting overhead arrows which is different from the current shieldwall in bannerlord.

Though I guess it wouldn't be as useful in most cases as AI archers in bannerlords don't fire arced shots.

i would be worried with how reliable the ai would be at commanding segments of your army for you. I mean we got that one blog about the battle ai but we cant be sure untill people play it

The plan, back at that time at least, was to have the commander behaving according to his personality.
Ecarand, the enemy general, is a defensive commander and stands fast on the top a hill with his troops, until the player approaches and he charges.
I am hoping they worked on that and is still a feature, but looked promising back then.

yes, just what i meant! i'm glad that was already thought into and i hope they only added more to it

yup, and what i'm talking about is on an even grander scale, each commander having their own battlefield personality

I'm not so sure that is what is happening here. It looks like since Ecarand had fewer troops and was not on the attack (indeed he did not want to fight in the pre-battle chat) he naturally took an advantageous defensive position, only going on the attack when a calvary charge down a hill seemed like a promising advantage, rather than allowing the opposing general to slowly approach. I can't say that this is the result of him being a defensive commander, or if all commanders would do something similar given his fewer numbers and weaker troops. I do hope that perhaps enemy lords personalities or their tactics skill level will affect how they approach battle though.

Maybe you didn't watch the video until the end, but Lust definitely mentions his personality influences his battle stance, check it out:

I didn't watch the Q&A section you are right. It seems he mentions both the general's personality as a factor and what I said about being the defender as a factor. I would love to see gameplay clearly showing how personality and skill comes into play. With this video Ecarand does exactly what you would expect from a lord on the defensive it isn't actually very different from the AI behavior in Warband though clearly there are some differences, such as the solo cavalry charge. I would love to see the exact same battle fought with a different lord that does something more aggressive because he has a more aggressive AI even if taking the defensive is a better option, or perhaps a high skill lord performing a more daring flanking maneuver on the archers. A risky move but necessary since he was at a disadvantage. Because Ecarand is "more defensive" it doesn't really show off the AI when he is placed in a defensive battle.

Thats a shieldwall from Total War

I think I heard something like this "... If you are a lord, and if king or marschall gives an order, you have to follow that order.Otherwise they will get angry and you will lose reputation and influence..." So that means commanders will give orders. but I don't know how the orders are going to be. Like, are they like "Stand here" or "CHARGE" or more complicated ones like "Wedge Cavalry, spearmen/infantry form a shieldwall, archers form square behind that shieldwall" etc.

There is a video of this where you are assisting another lord in a battle by commanding troops

pretty sure everything discussed and suggested is already in game or planned to be from many videos and dev blogs

it seems you're right, but its thanks to me posting this that i was able to find all the videos quoted here with the evidence that the devs have already put a lot of thought into this.
