Unable to delete items in edit mode (Solved)

The title says it all. I select an item and press delete, and nothing happens.

EDIT: Another problem I'm having is I'm using a windows 8, and the taskbar is getting in the way of some things...

Make sure your running in windowed mode, that always helps. You should be able to select the items, never had that problem myself.

I am running in windowed mode. I have no problems selecting and have built myself a nice little village. I'm just having problems deleting stuff.

Just select them in the editor's window, there is a list of all props which are on the scene.

I am... Like I said, the problem is that when I press backspace, nothing happens. Maybe I should try using a different keyboard?

Yeah you should try a different one...it's called "DELETE"

There is no delete key on this keyboard. There's a "del" key in the lower-right, but I already tried pressing that. 

EDIT: Using a different keyboard worked.
