Unable to change Warband serial key

Hi mateys, I've searched the forums and came up empty on the problem I'm experiencing. I'm hoping this is the proper place to post rather than the Warband section.

I was jubilated when the Warband beta was opened to all M&B players just recently, as this meant that I could finally play side by side in a battle with my wife, who has also been enjoying the game using my original serial key (according to the website, you're allowed to have up to two installations).

However, we can't simultaneously connect to the same Warband server, it disconnects the first when the second joins.

We weren't sure if Warband would have its own serial key when it was released at the end of March. If it uses M&B's original key, then it's just a case of buying another for £4 using Steam, no great loss. If it uses its own, we'd might as well save £4 and hang on a month and a half. Except we didn't want to wait, so we grabbed another copy of the original.

I uninstalled M&B, reinstalled it and found out that it remembered the previous serial key. A forum search revealed that I had to delete some strange Licenturion branch in the registry, after which I was able to put the shiny new M&B serial in when I next ran the game.

Unfortunately we'd already both installed the Warband beta with the former M&B serial key. And again, there doesn't seem to be an intuitive way to change Warband's serial key. So I uninstalled, reinstalled and found it was doing the same thing as the original, remembering the former serial number.

I've searched the forum and found nothing. There is no entry in the Licenturion branch for Warband, I've had a look with RegEdit and nothing obvious stands out. Thus I come humbly to the apothecary to relieve this ailment.

How can I put a new serial key into Warband?

-John

If you press Crt+F in Registry edit you can search for warband and maybe delete all the entries it finds. I don't see how it could do any harm since you are uninstaling it anyway.

I'll try it when I get home, but at this point I'm expecting some sister of Licenturion to have to deal with. You never know though, I might be pleasantly surprised. I needed more time to deal with this last night, curse work.

If you search the registry you'll have a standard M&B serial and a Warband one. As of .701 it should read the Warband one rather than look for the M&B one, but I'd change them both just to be sure.

Thanks, Archonsod, I'll try running it when I get home and see if it picks up the new serial key now. I haven't tested it yet since updating the original M&B's. If it's any help at all, the first key was from version 0.4-something or thereabouts.

If it's still borked, I'll rummage through the registry again even more thoroughly, but I have no idea what I'm looking for. Fingers crossed it'll be okay. I'll be back for more help if it's still clinging to the phantom of the old key this evening.

Cheers again,

-John

I think that fixed it. I deleted the registry entries again and M&B asked me for its serial. I closed the program without entering it. Then I ran Warband and it asked me for the key, proving it must have scrapped the old key by now. Very happy, put my new key into both of them now and it should be dandy. Will let you know if it gives me any trouble but right now it's looking great.

Thanks for your help, guys.

Not sure what the forum rules are on thread necromancy, but okay.

The registry is a system Windows uses to keep track of what's installed where and what its settings are, like a big table of contents. The program RegEdit (it comes with Windows) will let you browse and edit the registry. M&B and M&B: Warband both put serial keys into the registry. It's been years now since I had this problem so I don't remember the specifics, but Warband is fully released now and is no longer in beta testing. If you're having trouble, I would uninstall the game, search through the registry using RegEdit for "warband" and delete all the entries you find for M&B: Warband. Then reinstall it, it should prompt you for a serial key afresh rather than dredge up your previous one.

Before you uninstall, backup your saved games first just in case. It canes to lose a character in which you've invested. Hope this helps.

What operating system (OS) do you have installed? RegEdit is specific to Microsoft Windows. Not sure whether there's a registry equivalent on other OS'es.

Once you've found the serial keys and deleted them, you should be prompted for the new keys when M&B or M&B: Warband starts. Enter the key you do want and it'll be stored in the registry like the old ones. You should now be sorted. If you're having some other sort of problem then you may be suffering from another issue entirely. If this doesn't fix it, post up full details or find another thread which does describe your particular problem.

Hopefully this will fix your problem though, follow the details of the thread, it's got all the info you need for this problem. Good luck, matey.

You'd want to search using Ctrl+F rather than look manually. If you don't have any serial keys in the registry then I don't know what your problem might be, sorry matey. :-/ I wish I could be more help.
