Hrunting (beowulf quest) could be a 2 hand sword or bastard sword. It is legendary and therefore need not be historically accurate. How the sword is not special enough for the quest.

Wasn't Hrunting the sword Beowulf used to kill Grendel's mother... if so I believe the poem actually makes reference to it being a two-handed sword. Bear in mind the only reading of Beowulf I am at all familiar with is the Benjamin Bagsby(sp) performance, so that may be inaccurate.

But wasn't it also said he was so strong he wielded the two hander single handedly?

No, Hrunting is the sword he's given by Unferth which can't harm Grendel's mother. The giant sword is unnamed and "melts like an icicle" once he's killed Grendel's mother, so he never brings that out of the mere.

Later on, he takes the sword of the Frankish/Frisian champion Daeghrefn (Day-Raven), which is called "Naegling" - son of the nail. This is presumably the sword that breaks when he's fighting the dragon.

@Spongly

Ah I see!  That was actually buggin the crap outta me so thanks for clearing that up... and here I thought I had a good argument for getting a 2handed sword in the mod. Oh well... its still awesome with all its historical integrity!

If you really really love it, just pick foreigner on your character creation and cheat a 2h sword into your inventory :P Pretend you came from a mysterious far off land or what not.

Well I actually really like they way that this mod handles weapon speeds and damage and importing a native weapon into this mod is pretty gamebreaking.  I did try importing a bastard sword once into this mod from troop editor.... I felt extremely overpowered compared to my adversaries. Besides the models in this mod are absolutely beautiful.  It would kinda ruin it to use the native weapons imo.

Two handed sword?

Why?

I love shieldwalls  :D Hide, poke, hide, poke, hide, poke, get experience

Well, for being historically inaccurate, two handed swords were RARELY used on the battlefield. They were large, you needed enough room not to hurt your comrades, they were slow and... useless (unless you do not count special forces like Doppelsoldners who used Flambergers for disrupting formations of pikemen and used the swords for pushing polearms out of their way). Two handed swords were matter of tournaments or sport or duels.

@ Claimoar
There is a kind of recklessness associated with the Two handed sword that brings a new level of enjoyment to the mindless slaughter that this game typically devolves to.  But you're right, this mod employs very effective tactics that make a lack of Two handed swords a minimal loss.  Even if they were present I would still probably favor sword and board style to my typical slash, murder, bash approach.

I havent notice of tow hand sword in VII century. This type of weapon dont let use shield, and shield was the difference between life and death in these times.

2h sword developed especially between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries, when the evolution of armor allowed fight without the shield as a defensive weapon.

There's always the two handed axe, which is more effective than a sword, as it does piercing instead of cutting damage.

Two handed swords were NOT slow. At all. They usually weighed less than 4kg - almost nothing - and were balanced well. Don't dis the Zweihänder.

How about a compromise then?

Make a few longer handled swords capable of being used in both 1h / 2h means..

Also while "2h" swords did flourish during the 15Th century and onward they were actually used mostly in combination with pike formations to cut off the heads (points) of enemy pikes;
So called "bastard" swords or even most longsword variations were usually made with longer pummels to allow wider swings by using both hands.

Its worth mentoning that longer swords were most comonly used in mountainous areas, from later Scottish claymores to earlier falx's.
