Recruit
Just a few suggestions. Although there is the variables of what troops get what, since you seem to get quite a collection of weapons armour and horses, shouldn't a separate inventory be added for the party? Here from all the troops can choose an item from the party inventory and clearing a bit of room in your own personal invetory.

Food also needs a separate sub inv with like 9 slots when you put your cursor over it.

Wouldn't mind seeing a slightly more in depth ordering system where you can tell units or the whole party what to do and who gets involved like;

Number Committed Reserve
Knights 10/10 6 4
Infantry 6/14 6 0
Crossbowmen 16/20 8 8

Finally our own reinforcements can be called with reserves and have i noticed that only 24 units from either party side can be committed at once?

Mounted - HOLD
Infantry - Form - Sinle Line - Protect - Ranged - Front
Ranged - Form - Ranks in Line - Advance

This would depict that ALL mounted troops will hold position, der waiting, expensive troops don't like crossbow bolts. The infantry is protecting ranged troops only in a single line and in front of the Ranged units. As the ranged units are the main force and set to adnvance as opposed to charge. As such an opposing force should find this formation difficult to get past as the Ranged units would bring down almost anything stumbling in there way, with a great defencive barrier of Infantry. Also note that the choice of formation can have a great deciding effect on the outcome of battle, but if all else isn't working just set everyone to charge and let the bloodbath begin.

you just killed all your inf. the ranged weapon troops fire strate at there target most of the time hitting you or a hill

Ok so yeah with the current ai i can see where your going, all your inf get arrows to the back of their heads. I have heard suggestions of crouching, could be very useful here. only time will tell though i guess

The games probably too far in development for this but anyway...

Could we build our own units like you would your character in a standard SP RPG?

Choose the armour, weapons, horses etc. then use it as a template for recruiting more "clones" of the same design. It would obviously have to impact furiously upon your wage bill the better the troops are, but it would be sweet.

Different peoples, Swadians/Vaegirs/Khergits/etc. could have different physical traits (like choosing an orc/human/dwarf/honeymonster in a standard RPG), giving you a choice as to what you want to supply to a particular type of soldier(nimble people would be best suited archers, stocky people would be best off with armour).

Anyone know the game mechanics in Impossible Creatures? By mixing this with that you can create an almost limitless number of units (like combining a badger and an elephant for instance), giving rise to tactics galore.

An almost unlimited selection of player created units, any type you can devise with the items available in the smithys and peoples in-game. The combinations are pretty much endless.

What do you reckon?

since everyone would create black-armor clad horse-archers or knights, there isn't much point. besides, it sounds liek a pretty complex system.
