Troop types...

How about a new unit type:

Priest

Now, I'm not talking about the fantasy priest running around with healing spells and that garbage.

But something like:

Initiate
Monk
Bishop
Archbishop

Or whatever would be an appropriate progession.

Priests wouldn't be very good combat troops. They'd have pretty crappy weapon skills. But they'd have nice armor... because they're combat medics.

Priests should give your party the Surgery and First Aid skill bonuses. And the higher their rank, the better the skill is in effect. (Maybe 2 levels per rank).

Because in medieval times, priests were mainly the ones responsible for dealing with wounded. And they often accompanied troops as field medics.

Also, perhaps having a priest (or maybe one priest for every X troops) would give your army a morale bonus.

Well, better make one a companion, not a troop type. 10 archbishops in your party? Expecially since they are not good at combat - they will get slaughtered fast.
And besides, troops do not share their party skills.

Hmm... true...
Sweet... another hero who can't die... but will get knocked out as soon as an enemy looks at him funny. :p

I turned Marnid into a medic type guy once he levelled up a bit. Very useful to have a few levels of surgery to keep your guys alive after a fight. It's far too easy to make a mistake and get your entire band knocked senseless by a swift cavalry charge.
