You've read "historical" and you've gotten nervous, haven't you? In the variety is the spice; my friend.

I start drooling and shaking as soon as the "H" and "R" words pop in these forums

Braced spears for footmen is a must, cavalry seems as OP as it was in WB.

Not just this: any two handed weapon Is more effective than spear with current system.

I and several Beta participants gave feedback about the pikes. In the case of being implemented, it is necessary that the "couch" is introduced.

Is bracing implemented in Bannerlord? Never saw a gameplay where someone or the AI does this? It would be a shame if they dont add bracing and naval combat/trade/travel....

Sounds like Warband all over again  :meh:

In Warband spears are definitely better than two handed weapons against cavalry, at least when both players know what they're doing.

All polearms get a special effect against horses in warband, pikes and Spears are not that better than glaives or longaxes that are polearm too. In fact rhodok lose them after upgrade. Bannerlord seems m&b 1 vanilla before warband.

As far as I know long axes cannot stop a charging horse like spears or pikes do (glaives can, though). And while I was originally talking about multiplayer, in singleplayer the problem could be somewhat fixed if spearmen switched to a secondary weapon once the charge has been interrupted, as most polearms perform poorly when too close to the enemy.

You have to switch them in polearm mode, they Will have a worse moveset. No idea if ai do that.

I know, I tried it, it just doesn't work for long axes. Also I don't think I've ever seen the AI switch weapon modes, that could be added to Bannerlord though, as well as kicking, I can't wait to be corpsekicked by some looters.

For the spear and shield the "couch" could be like this:

I don't quite agree. Considering "my" original troop tree;

this kind of actions I would represent them in the following way:

IutaS.jpg

The Kontarion (pike + sword) would operate just like a Macedonian pikeman or pikeman of a Spanish Tercio. Its main weapon in the pike. This is the one that would stick in the ground (brace) to fight a cavalry charge. As soon as the unit engages in melee combat and the enemy is less than one metre away, then the pike must be dropped on the ground and the unit should use the sword as its last defence.

The Menavlatoi (menavlion + shield + sword) operates just like a hoplite. Its main offensive weapon is the menavlion with one hand, using the shield as a defense with the other that remains free. In reduced space or in direct melee body to body where the enemy is less than one meter, this unit should use the sword + shield. This unit only has the possibility of bracing with the menavlaion in two hands mode.

I like your troop tree, although i still prefer to have one more tier of pikemen

Maybe, they can add a phalanx formation that can have a defensive and agresive mode. In the defensive mode the phanlanx are stopped the first line could be brace their pike and the other lines could hold their pikes for attacking. And for the agresive mode they could move while bracing their pikes. The damage could be calculate by the speed of the enemy when they collide to the pike.

I still doubt that factions should have access to pikemen troops. The Empire, the south part of vlandia and maybe battania for counter heavy cavalry factions that surrounding it. Also, i would like to see pikemen troops with the heavy armor of the Fiann

For the sake of a search for precise historical fidelity (FBohler don't get nervous) and a proper game balance. I believe that for these reasons only, the Empire (Byzantine sources) and Battania (Pictish sources) should be the only factions with true pike units.

I don't think anyone should have the Fiann's heavy armor, including the Fiann, god it is such an ugly design.
if instead of the shoulders put on a coat will look good

Very nice ideas, I must say. However, I fear you won't be able to mod that into the game because of the hardcoded troop AI. Very suspicious.

2018 seems to have a reasonable polearm design, now the polearm is a powerful version of two-handed weapons, and one cut a fully armed cataphract with a spearhead.
