Troop selection army management

Hi all.

I'm not sure if there is a way to do this (if there is I haven't found it) but it would be nice to have a little more detailed control over who fights and in what order in battle.
Especially when you've set the battle size low. It seems that the troops which appear are randomly chosen from whoever follows you. I would love to be able to select which troops will appear in the field, and what order reinforcements would enter.
Taking it deeper, some kind of tie in with troop advancement would be nice too. Basically so that troops who are close to being able to be promoted would be guaranteed to appear on the battlefield.

For the last time, the order of your troops in the party screen affects the battle order. For crying out loud, how hard can it be to notice this?

I never did, for one. I tend to sort by troops by level of advancement, and I tend to have fewer knights than archers, for example, so I've always seen my army as a mix of pretty much all my trooops.

I did notice it. It just isn't 100% though. I can have 10 crossbowmen in the first slot, 5 knights in the second and 5 skirmishers third. I start the battle with 3 crossbowmen, 2 knights and 2 skirmishers for example.
What I would like is some way of saying I want all 10 crossbowmen to start this battle and 5 skirmishers to be the first re-inforcements. In other words, the ability to tailor the force for a battle without needing to recruit dismiss troops. At the moment it seems to take a random number from each troop slot.

You're right about there being a random element involved. I'm not sure why armagan did it like that, maybe it's to simulate the chaos of battle or something.

He explained how it worked once, IIRC it goes like this: Regular units all have the same probability to join the battle, heroes have a 100% probability. The randomizer starts at the first party slot, and the troops either join or don't join, as luck will have it. If there's still room in the battle after all the first-slot units have been dealt with, it moves to the next slot, and it keeps going until all troops who will join the fray have been selected. After that, the battle starts.

Personally, I think it's fine.

Would a real army commander, let his troops join by random order?
Don't think so.
If you want to do a quick rush on the enemy, and i set knights 1st slot and by example footman 2nd slot. WHY would i want footman to join my battle? Random troop choice should be negated.
If i chooce to do a max battle size, and u can bring lets say 16 units with you.

Option example:
20 knights 1st slot
You will fill up 16 unit slots with knights.

Option example:
10 knights 1st slot
10 archers 2nd slot
You will fill up 10 knights and 6 archers.

Option example:
5 footman 1st slot
10 archers 2nd slot
10 knights 3rd slot
You will fill up 5 footman, 10 archers, 1 knight etc.

I prefer to bring WHAT i chooce into a battle instead of have the computer RANDOM my choice.

Random example:
20 knights 1st slot
20 swordsisters 2nd slot
10 footman 3rd slot
10 archers 4th slot
You will bring 6 knights, 4 swordsisters, 4 footmen, 2 archers.

It would be kinda tedious to have to go through some kind of troop deployment menu every time you entered battle.
I think it's alright the way it is. Not perfect, I guess, but good enough.

I agree, although I wouldn't let my Sword Sisters fight at night as they seem to be nudists. They wear nothing in battle and I swear I did not mod this in.

Ok.

EVERYBODY SHUT UP FOR A SEC AND LET ME WORK OUT THE COMPRAMISE!!!

Ok.

Here it goes.

KEEP the RANDOM-SELECTION SYSTEM

HOWEVER

BEFORE EVERY BATTLE STARTS, IT BRINGS UP THE TROOP MENU
TO START WITH A UNIT, YOU SELECT IT ON THE RIGHT, AND THEN YOU CLICK "SELECT" IN THE MIDDLE. IT WILL THEN MOVE 1 OF THAT UNIT TO THE LEFT. TO ADD MULTIPLE UNITS, JUST CLICK THE "SELECT" BUTTON MULTIPLE TIMES.

HOWEVER, THERE WOULD BE A BUTTON IN THE MIDDLE, NEAR THE BOTTOM THAT SAYS "RANDOM"

THE COMPUTER RANDOMLY SELECTS UNITS TO JOIN THE BATTLE, IN THE SAME WAY IT DOES NOW.

Compromised.

I don't think that wll please either party, but it only takes a small change so that it does. There needs to be a checkbox in the options to automatically select random, or else people will ***** about having to push that button before every battle. And maybe a 'select all' button so that you don't have to click the select button 100 times for your huge uber army.

how about being able to order one specifc type of unit in battle? order them by slots maybe? each slot can then be told "hold this position" or "charge" I think it would work... even if you keep the element of randomness in this you still end up with a lot more "strategic possibilities.
