If you think about it, we have started delving into this even as we began to wear glasses to enhance our vision. Sure, glasses are not really a permanent part of our body, but neither would other more complex enhancements necessarily be 'permanent'.

Think of anything from synthetic skin and internal organs to extra limbs to modifications of the brain and behavioral patterns.

Perhaps in 1000 years or so there will be no single universal 'human form' but instead all our bodies would be highly personalized for our jobs and personal preferences. Programmer? Oh, well you could enhance your reaction and get wider hands with 7 fingers on each to make typing faster. Want to have orgasms at whim? No problem, pay for modification and you got it. These are some of the least radical examples.
