Transfer: M&B Repository -> M&B Nexus

正在查看此主题的用户

...Now M&B/WB modders put their works on M&BRepository, MODDB, MBX/Streetofeyes and perhaps other...
...so why not open a new M&B/WB section on NEXUS...?

...it mean more publicity for the Game and visibility for mods...
- modders can choose which sites to use or to use them all
- users can download their preferred mods from which sites give best performance

...if and when the time come to close M&BRepository (hope it will never happen) then we can choose the site that we like more...

A couple years ago, when I first registered, the nexus was awesome
Then the premium membership came up.Result?Massive amounts of ads, slow site loading (Because of ads)
Then they decided to to make it so not only does downloading fileds have ads, but they no longer open in the window.Result?
Search waht you want. click on link. Click on files.Click on a file link.Wait for the window to pop up.Wait on the 40 second ad. Click on the server you want. Wait for the 'bloop' and press on the warning thing and click download the files, which for some reason, refreshes the page. Click on files AGAIN.Click the download link.Click on the server (Yay no ad this time ) wait aroudn 3-14 seconds for the download to ppop up.Now you can start
The repository doesn't have all that, but the download times are only around 63 kb/second...

Ads. The Nexus does have ads.

I've told Janus that the video ads (that play before downloading a file) would not be on any Nexus site for M&B. The video ads are currently on the others sites because Skyrim is on the horizon and it's going to need it's own servers. I'm also saving up for a couple more file servers in some different locations around the world for better download speeds and redundancy. All of this costs money! If I'm going to do things I like to do it right. I was a partner in a major UK web host for many years and I get great rates from these folks now; so the servers are powerful and well maintained, I'm paying for an enterprise level backup solution so if the worst did happen everything would be safe, and so on.

Damn right it's disgraceful!

How dare a service with no advertising revenue not pay for high end download speeds!

And how dare a service that offers fast downloads offset it's massive operation costs with advertisements!

What is the world coming to, when a man can't even get free things from the internet without some form of minor inconvenience? A disgrace!

Edit:
Awww, but I wanted to be sarcastic.

He did choose a piss poor set of ads though, they're all loud, play automatically and the mute buttons don't work.

They're also laggy.

In case anyone is curious, the Repository currently serves roughly 25 TB of downloads per month (~26.28 TB at last count).

We're currently close to going in to open beta for our Mod Manager client that at the moment is dubbed the "Nexus Client". Here's the news post.

In a nut-shell, it's a one-click download/install system for the Nexus sites that will be compatible with about 99% of all the current mods. All the user will need to do is click the "Download with client" link and the software will download the file. Another click will install the file. It has full download pausing and resuming support for all members, not just premium members, to the point that even restarting the client from a system crash will restart the download process from where it was left off. Premium members will be able to multi-thread their downloads as well for maximum speeds. Oh, and it's ad-free. So all the hate on the current download system could/should be gone

It's an opt-in system, so if you want to carry on modding the games the Nexus sites support in the same way you have for years nothing will stop you.

Obviously there's a lot more to it than that, but that's the prudent stuff that's relevant to this thread.

The client is going to be released on a copy-left, open source license so anyone can see, modify and expand on the code.

Such a feature is great, i hate looking for "mods/addons" paths wich i generally forget after a few months, i already used such downloaders/installers (curse's not to mention it...)
Only trouble is if you use different versions of the same game, as we have to do with M&B for some mods...
But i like the idea, thx again, DarkOne, let mods sites live!

Desura already provides that functionality.
There are lots of mods from the 3 existing M&B games that can be downloaded at your maximum speed in parallel from more than 20 international CDN locations.

Later on, you've auto-update with changelogs, better organization, bookmarking, dev tools for modders like API and cloud space, lots of compatible games and you can even buy the games within the app.

So you aren't going to have much quota over that. Apart from Desura, GoG Manager and Steam the rest of downloaders are a pain in the ass.
Might be related with the nonexistence of a premium v1p l33t m4sta pwnz0r system. You know: Liberté, égalité, fraternité.

You might be surprised, but I don't work for them, only enjoy their service.

PS: When you're logged in the client all the ads from ModDB and IndieDB are completely removed. Deal with it.

EDIT: And learn about unobtrusive JS, It's painful to navigate in your site with NoScript. You can also do some menus in pure css.

Not that I'm not a huge Desura fan, but how is that really relevant?

Desura isn't mbrepository and although the Nexus Client probably won't be as feature rich it's still a great step towards ease of use for the website, especially seeing as it will presumably work with all mods, rather than just a select few approved ones like Desura.

Desura is funded by game sales. Unless you're implying that the Nexus websites start charging for mods it's not exactly a fair comparison.

Few approved? The only requirement is to be in playable state.
The only problem I see is that some of the lesser modders don't want the hassle of keeping a ModDB profile and then contacting with the staff.

Anyways you can upload your work without making even a profile.

The problem I see with the Nexus Sites is more in attitude.
More business orientated and restrictive than the good fellows of the other side, that is more a community project than a downloads site.

And do these clients work with the 50,000+ files on the Nexus sites? Can they one-click install all the files, and keep them up-to-date at the click of a button? Can you select which mods are "essential" to you so when you come back from a couple of years away the client will automatically download and install your essential files ready for playing without you having to manually find and add each one individually? Hmm...I think not. And that's just scratching the surface.

I know you're a Nexus hater and a massive Desura fanboi, but it's getting quite old now. This client isn't Desura, and it wasn't designed to be. Comparing the two would be like comparing Mount & Blade with Heroes of Might and Magic. Two very different concepts with certain genre similarities.

Do you even use the Repository or are you just here to crap on someone else's parade?

I was unaware that Desura was open source. Is it open source?

Desura:
A for profit game sale client, developed and owned by a company, requires approval of mods before being available to download through the client.

Nexus Client:
Not for profit community mod site tool, open source and made by community members, does not require approval for mods to be downloadable through the client.

Sure you didn't just mix the names up there? I'm a huge Desura fan too, but this is just silly.

You don't need a client for that. At least if the page is straight-forward.
I've been trying to download stuff for the Witcher in your site, and is simply annoying.

Will be, once it's completed. At least partially for the Linux port currently in development.

Have fun.

Now I remember why I don't follow the Star Wars: Conquest development anymore, I got tired of your constant over aggression and complaining. I think it was sometime after you whining about not getting mod of the year on MODDB.

You don't need a client for one click mod download and instillation and automatic update now? Could you link me to a website using this magical and awe-inspiring method, truly it would be a thing of wonder.

Even if I knew what you were referring to with this sentence, quoting a sentence about not comparing apple and oranges in order to make a statement comparing an apple to an orange is almost awe inspiring.

Glad to hear that, but a partially open-source Linux port does not an open source make. Heck partially open-source is an oxymoron to begin with.
