So I have been testing quests, Which makes you Loose Honour.
Made a character with Honor, Mercy and Generosity. And later one with Valor

Honorable quests:
Kill Brigands
Caravan Ambush
Caravan Escort
Art of Trade

The following quests made me loose the Honor trait right away!
Dishonourable Quests:
X villiage needsTools.
Train Troops for X villiage
Deliver Herd
Army of Poachers
Extortion by Deserters
Bandit Base near X

Some of these are quite odd, specially Train troops and Extortions. I have skipped many of the quests given by Gang Leaders, I am asuming they give dishonor aswell.

Now comes to the weirdest Trait: Valor!
I have no idea how this one works. Recently I made a Khuzait character with Valor. Did some smithing and bought some ok gear (not the best, medium armour and a vlandian lance). And I always keep loosing the Valor trait whoever I fight against. Singlehandle taking in 20 loots? nope lost it.

what does traits do anyway??? any significant help??? or just used to determine if two people are "compatiable" with each other, marriage, companion cohesiveness???

It is because the game has a (hidden) trait score to determine your (visible) traits.

1000 gives you the first level, 4000 the second.

Character generation doesn't actually give you the associated trait score, so the first time the game checks (i.e. completing a quest), it sees you don't have enough trait score for that trait and strips it from you.

It gives the player better chances at persuasion. Traits also do things like make bandits much more likely to surrender (Daring), and influence voting.

I think they will be used for persuasion.

The more Honorable you, the easier Honorable persuasion attempts will be. Also the opposite will be true, if something is dishonorable, and you are Honorable, it should make it a hard attempt.

The most common place I see it is in XXX wants his daughter found quest.

It's excellent for persuasion, and getting Vassals over from the MIGHTY KHUZAIT EMPIRE is an excellent strategy.

I basically talked all of Battania over except Caladogs clan to Strugia in earlier patches. Only cost me 800.000 gold (aka 8 Javelins), such cheap trick, but hey, they had half the map. And I had also talked over half of Khuzait in that play. Calradia was very blue.

Charming Lords&Ladies work too!
For example:
Lords/Ladies you marry will like you more of you use the traits, aka quicker getting kids.
Lords/Ladiesyou marry will ike you less if you only use Charm or the "standard", aka almost getting no kids.

And since I have 9 kids on my Battania Lady with Honour and Generosity with Sein who also has that. Welp, he loves me.
I noticed the same thing on an Southern Empire playthrough, I married a girl with just Honor clicking, she got pregenant 6 days later, and we got 4 kids now.

Ok - but how do you keep traits on your character? Mine just disappear - no difference which one I choose - all gone in less than an hour of play...

Honor: do ONLY the honorable quest above.
Generosity and mercy follow the same pattern as Honor. But generosity are not removed with quests like X Needs Tools.

As I wrote in the OP, the valortrait is the hardest one to figure out, however.

So basically I would have to ignore most of the quests? That blows... I rather loose traits for now... In earlier versions after few years of game time honor and generosity traits appeared on my char that lost valor - will just hope that can happen again instead of ignoring great quests like desterters, poachers or bandit base ;/ Looks like traits are poorly implemented at the moment ;/

I can confirm now, that I just gained Honor trai on my character - it was not my starting trait (Valor was). I did all kind of quests and did not skip any that I wanted to do - so deserters, tools, poachers and others will not block gaining trait again even after you loose it at start.

I know this is an old post but I fell down this rabbit hole actually trying to lose my merciful trait. Basically I'm trying to use the exploit where you can bring back your retired player into the party. He has the roguery but it literally says you need at least 0 mercy for it. Just as you were I was confused as to how I kept gaining and losing my honor merciful and generous traits but I did notice over time that by saving my allies in battle, letting captured foes go and sparing bandits or taking them as troops kinda solidified it. Before I was 45 If i raided enough villages and devastated enough cities I would lose my mercy or honor trait but it was now easy to reclaim it by letting folks go or giving a town more goods than they had money. Now I am 88 I have scum saved several times but even when I execute folks I end up only gaining the devious trait and mercy and generosity are literally still there. Have I done to much good to do bad? Or do I have to like really kill some folks to get a merciless trait?

There's a trick to NOT lose your merciful trait

when you rooting a villiage, only loot 90% then cancel it, then it wont damage your merciful trait
