Trade skill question

I just recently discovered this game and I'm really enjoying it. However, there is one thing I haven't been able to figure out exactly. The "Trade" skill is supposed to mitigate the "Trade Penalty", but what is the "Trade Penalty"?

you know when you buy something? it always costs more than wen you sell it back? that differance in price is the trade penalty! so with a high trade skill that penalty is reduced i.e. you start making more money from selling loot :smile:

So, naturally, I wonder if someone could get a trade skill so high that he/she could just buy items for a price x, then sell it back for x+y? Is it possible to get a trade skill so high that it makes the difference between selling and buying negative?

Just doing some quick math, here are some approximate formulas for relative buying and selling penalties based upon your trade skill:

Ia = Item cost adjusted for your trading skill
Ib = Base item cost
T= Trading skill

For armor and weapons:

Buying:

Ia = (2.0093 -(1.0093*T)/10) * Ib

A person with 0 trading skill will pay slightly double the base cost of the item.

Selling:

Ia = (.331 +((1-.331)*T) /10) * Ib

A person with 0 trading skill will sell goods for roughly one third the base cost.

In order to afford a given good through trading, you have to sell about six times that good's value worth of items to obtain it.

Trade items:

Buying:

Ia = (1.2 - .02*T) * Ib

A person with 0 trading skill will pay 20% for a trade good than its base cost.

Selling:

Ia = (5/6 + T/60) * Ib

A person with 0 trading skill will receive 5/6ths of a trade good's base cost when selling.

A person with 0 trading skill has an exchange rate of 1.44; in other words, you would have to sell items totalling a base cost of 1440 to purchase items totalling a base cost of 1000.

Exchange rates based upon levels of trading skill:

Trade Goods exchange rate = (1.2 - .02*T)/(5/6 + T/60)
Weapons and gear exchange rate = (2.0093 -(1.0093*T)/10)/(.331 +((1-.331)*T) /10)

Trade good rates by level of trading skill:

0 trading: 1.440 (1440 coins worth of items sold per 1000 coins worth of items bought)
1 trading: 1.388 (1388 coins worth of items sold per 1000 coins worth of items bought)
2 trading: 1.338 (1338 coins worth of items sold per 1000 coins worth of items bought)
3 trading: 1.291 (1291 coins worth of items sold per 1000 coins worth of items bought)
4 trading: 1.244 (1244 coins worth of items sold per 1000 coins worth of items bought)
5 trading: 1.200 (1200 coins worth of items sold per 1000 coins worth of items bought)
6 trading: 1.157 (1157 coins worth of items sold per 1000 coins worth of items bought)
7 trading: 1.116 (1116 coins worth of items sold per 1000 coins worth of items bought)
8 trading: 1.076 (1076 coins worth of items sold per 1000 coins worth of items bought)

Armour / Gear trade rates:

0 trading: 6.070 (6070 coins worth of items sold per 1000 coins worth of items bought)
1 trading: 4.796 (4796 coins worth of items sold per 1000 coins worth of items bought)
2 trading: 3.889 (3889 coins worth of items sold per 1000 coins worth of items bought)
3 trading: 3.210 (3210 coins worth of items sold per 1000 coins worth of items bought)
4 trading: 2.682 (2682 coins worth of items sold per 1000 coins worth of items bought)
5 trading: 2.261 (2261 coins worth of items sold per 1000 coins worth of items bought)
6 trading: 1.912 (1912 coins worth of items sold per 1000 coins worth of items bought)
7 trading: 1.630 (1630 coins worth of items sold per 1000 coins worth of items bought)
8 trading: 1.388 (1388 coins worth of items sold per 1000 coins worth of items bought)

And so there you have it. I hope that was enough detail to gag an elephant. :smile:

Good job leo.

The answer to stonewall is then that no matter how high your trade skill, you will always get ripped by the merchants selling back and forth in same location.

I never find trading skill to be that important as you get filthy rich off loot anyhow even with trade of 0.

Nice to have Marnid early on though as his trading skill helps with initial cash drought.
