I've rolled back to 1.3.1 as the 1.4.1 update is not much fun to play.
I would say that I experienced a similar situation in the very early game when I started trading. Prices were much closer together, you could buy wine everywhere for less than 50 denars and its much, much harder to turn a profit.
After some time, some wars and the economic model doing it's thing (probably around 100 days), it somewhat stabilises and you start to see the commodity price spread between cities according to their supply and demand, and you can start to make decent trading profits again.
Of course you can totally offset all of this by crafting javelins...lol....balance
