I think that you should notte that Spartans never rode horses...

The spartans won't ride horses in the mod, although a very few did ride horses historically, at the very beginning, when they formed the two kings' royal guard. They abandoned the use of it eventually and turned to heavy infantry. But that's another subject.

Also I was quite bored to read 6 pages of post so I'll ask: Who are the enemies? Are they gonna be like they were; city state and all of them enemies between them? or will there be an outer enemy?

Sparta and her allies versus Athens and her allies.

Ok. That's what I thought it would be

Hi all,

I`m really looking forward to this. Admittedly I`m a sucker for ancient Greece and read Thukydides at once a year...

You wanted suggestions so blame yourself for here they come:

- factions. Sicily and S. Italy are a must, after all the disaster at Syracuse is the direct reason for Athens defeat. This would include the different greek and barbarian cities, aligned to Athens or Syracuse.

- well... The above calls for a naval module which may be provided courtesy of Nijis and Yoshiboy.

- troops. In general Greeks despised the bow. So I believe that archers, both foot and mounted should be available as mercenaries only, the kick-ass Cretan archers for example. BTW, they are excellent light melèe inf also. Mercenaries should be recruitable in neutral settlements only, which must be provided. For ranged troops slingers must be included, with Rhodian slingers available as mercs.

- tactics. Unfortunately, Greek warfare at that time was all abt. formations. Formations are indispensable if this is going to be historically accurate. And yes, "loose skirmish order" is a formation also. Possibly some help could be available at TLD and 1066. For throwing cav it would awesome if there was a cantabrian circle formation, maybe only for tarantines.

- equipment. Seems OK except for cav. They should have open faced helmets like the Ionian helmet or the helmets modelled on cloth hats and caps.

Regards, Oldtimer

Oldtimer:

Thanks for the suggestions. Surprisingly I had similar ideas when I started working on the mod. When I first started the map, the first steps were to make it adaptable to the naval combat script. Unfortunately, like with other mods that use that system, I'd have to choose between navy or horses. I chose cavalry. The absence of naval warfare obviously takes sicily and south italy out of picture, at least for the current M&B version.

I agree with the archer part, but I think taking them off the map parties would be the same as not implementing them at all, since the player would only be able to recruit them, and not fight next or against them - ie. not see them at all. What I can do is rename them to mercenaries, though. The mercenary/neutral polis recruitment is already in place.

I read somewhere that cavalry formation can't be scripted right now, I'm not sure though. But I'll definitely pay attention to formations.

About the equipment, the "cavalry" you've seen is actually me on a horse . I was just riding to show the models, I have yet to take pics of cavalry units. The cavalry (xystophoroi unit) uses hats, Ionian and boeotian helmets.

Kind Regards.

EDIT:

Talon:

I've just looked into the SharpBronze files, well done. Let me know if you can make me any of those three weapons up there, ok? Congrats for the baby, by the way, I've just read about it.

Thanks. Yeah, I'll see if I can make those for you tonight, then I'm on vacation for a week. If you want to use any of the Sharp Bronze stuff let me know as I've been updating and improving most of them. Actually, it looks like you may have run across some of the models through other projects already.

Yeah, I'll make a list of what I liked the most and send it to you, I was thinking of borrowing some low poly spears since mine went a bit too high, so I'd rather avoid equipping every unit with them. I considered going a bit high on polys so I could texture the buttcaps the way I wanted, but I guess I got a little excited.  I also really enjoyed those two ancient looking bronze sword texes and the hoplon meshes, they are well uvmapped across the dds, didn't know it was your work, good job.

EDIT: That athenian helmet mesh is yours by the way, the one on the attica hoplite.

I've retextured it. I'll send the dds to you if you want it.

i think, this mod better than other greek mods.Models are good,i mean, good job Lynores...

Thanks, it's almost done graphic wise but it's all make up though, I still have to get down to scripting after I'm done with everything else. I'll try to fit in at least a couple scripts and quests before the release.

The sauroter seems somewhat large in those screenshots, and it's a real shame you can't have the overhand thrust animation.

Also, I read in the first post that Theban hoplites are to be recruited in Athens? Thebes supported Sparta during the Peloponnesian Wars because she was a traditionnal enemy of Athens, Theban hoplites should be recruitable in Thebes and her vassal cities in Boetia. It would be awesome if you're going to do a gastraphetes, although the animations will be impossible and I don't think it will fit in with the gameplay as it was only used during sieges.

UPDATE:

# Added Talon to the contributors list;
# Started working on Thrace and Illyria as new factions.

Regarding the sauroter, I believe it's the angle that makes you think that, I really zoomed the camera on it. The overhand thrust animation is totally possible, I've just been lazy to script it while I'm working on map icon animations. Theban xystophoroi in athens, where did I post that?? I'll check it out, I must have been on scotch when I wrote it. Thebes recruits both hoplites and cavalry, and yeah they're recruitable from Thebes itself.

I'll see what I can do about the gastaphretes. Thanks for the heads up.

I think it was in the main post yesterday, at least; you seem to have updated since then.

I'd love to see sieges in, with all that entails, but that would require alot of coding..

Okey,

I see that you got the tread moved  Your models are good, as always. The icons really look wonderful, the progress of the mod even better!

A couple updates:

I might halt the previews for a while so I can focus on Thracians and Illyrians, then possibly a couple macedonian units.

these textures look odly like RTW

My intention was to make this mod look like RTW but with a darker feeling to it, like the movies Troy and 300, while still keeping the accuracy on items etc. I'm trying not to stray from it. I think I'm having to now, though, those Thracians were so colorful.

UPDATE:

I finished the second sword on his to-do list:

Now, this is what I think:

The acropolis map icon that you made, I don't think it really needs anything more onto it. The only thing I think it need are cliffs on the edges of the acropolis, and a better texture. Putting more on it seems like a waste of polygons to me, and after fiddling with it for a while, I found that it really doesn't add much to the icon as a whole.

So, what I have done, and like is this:

I lowered the roof on the acropolis to a realistic, historical amount, deleted some odd looking houses, and created a cliff surrounding it. I think that once you texture it nicely, and get a clean texture it will look very, very nice without any extra statues, I also got rid of alot of polygons on the columns for the acropolis.

Here is a picture:
acropolisxh5.png

Yeah that's what I thought as well. I will texture that one, then redo a new icon for Athens, hopefully resembling the original, and one for Sparta, provided I get enough reference material.

Can you send that mesh to my mail? Is it UVMapped? Also, if you could make a bridge icon sometime, it'd be awesome.

EDIT: I'm working on Thracian/Illyrian textures and meshes, I guess after that, there won't be much besides the scene props. I can't wait to close up and take a break from rigging/modelling/texturing so I can focus on scripting.

I'll send it in a second, and no, it is not UV mapped. I'll send you my acropolis one also.

I'd rather model. Scripting = annoying and boring. Then you get those random errors that take forever to figure out. Makes you want to go emo.

EDIT: I sent all that stuff too.
