Tournaments

Users who are viewing this thread

Hi all, i'm putting this topic up to vouch MY humble opinion on tournaments. I need to start first by saying that this is no criticism of the system of the system in place but merely a suggestion by a fan who wants to share his ideas. I feel that it can be a little easy to own in tournaments and seems a fast way to lots of cash. My suggestion is to implement a system similar to 1257 where by contestants have their own weapons but to make Pop's a bit different contestants should also have their own Armour but have teams shown by a coloured  sash tied at the waist or over the arm, lance tips, lumes etc. This way you are going to come up against some real opposition when there are lords competing or even other party members. Perhaps even each city could have a resident champion, obviously a wealthy fighter with good weapons and Armour.

I dont know. What do you think? Tell me if thats lame. In short i think players should have to work harder for their cash!!!! mwuhahahahaaaaaaaa!!!!!

Tournaments are too EASY?

I feel so inadequate

Yeah, not sure about too easy being a good descriptor.

That being said, I'm not sure how the sashes work while still allowing you to have your armor just as it was, but I'm guessing it will require more items be added, and as noted, we don't have the room.

If they work differently, then the issue in return becomes that you can dominate a tournament simply by having good equipment - and that doesn't match the vision of having them based on skill.

Normally I get to a point where I can kick anyone's ass easily with my own gear in one Pendor Great Sword slash and be quite resilient to enemy strikes too, and without  using any Enchanted or Noldor items, just stuff from the store. It doesn't take too much work. I don't see how that would make tournaments more challenging, it would make them interesting though, fighting with the same old practice gear gets old pretty quick.

EDIT: yeah, what kaeldragor said.

One compromise on this might be a dueling feature.  Duel other lords, or scripted duel events like in Wedding Dance.  They'd use your own equipment and give you a skilled and well-equipped opponent at the same time.  It'd add flavor, without altering tournaments as they are.

Wasn't there a duel other lords tweak in the tweak thread?  IIRC, it took the defend a ladies honor quest and set up some dialog options so you could trigger that fight scene with any lord without a relations hit.  You could try that with PoP and see what (if anything) blew up

I've implemented it - I'll let you know how it goes.

No change in save game... not sure if a conversations.txt change is save game compatible.  Also a consideration: the rumor change to conversations with lords may impact this one's compatibility.

Is the duel feature like the one in Star Wars: Conquest, where you can go up to Yoda at any time, challenge him, and whup his little green ass? I would want some more context than that. I can't see any random lord agreeing to go mano-a-mano just because you asked. To wit:

- Duel a lord after defeating his army, with his freedom at stake.

- Duel some random pugilist in a tavern, with either some money or personal gear at stake.

- Maybe duel a companion using your own gear, just for fun/XP. Similar to fighting them at the training grounds, but different.

Regarding tournaments in general, a chap at another forum had this nice idea: Instead of just beefing everybody up, create three classes of NPC fighters - a really fast guy with low HP, a total tank with high HP but low agility, and a balanced guy.

But probably the best thing that could be done to the arena is outside our scope, which would be improving NPC AI so they get on abandoned horses and pick up dropped weapons. And not getting stuck in corners.

I think duels are alright, I notice I don't win as often as I did in native. And if it's too easy for you because it makes you a lot of money, just skip it.

How do you suggest to fund an empire if you want tournaments made harder? With ransoms? Fief taxes really wont get you far honestly, and people need the cash from tourneys.

Are you sure you have Damage to Player at 100%?

Champion Fighters are like Pendorian Jedi, and have quite frequently one-shot me (lvl 4:cool: with their club.

The one thing I would like to see is more equipment normalization. While the secondary clubs for everyone are great, mismatches such as mounted with lance vs. on foot with a two-handed sword still occur.

A tournament is easy when you:

Knock down horses to get to your opponent, corner horsebacked opponents by gameplay exploits through manoeuvering so they can't hit you when stuck in a wall, or when you bunnyhop and try to hit enemies off their horses in mid air. Or when you play on low difficulty (I am often guilty of the latter hopping and difficulty issue myself at times).

A tournament is hard when you:

Do not knock down horses and keep things real (in many mediaeval tournaments the tackling of a horse on intent was a grave dishonour and could cost you your title or at least your reputation), do not corner your horsebacked opponents against a wall since if this was real, they'd have steered away without an AI to get them stuck and by attacking from the ground without jump-attacks. Ofcourse also by playing on normal difficulty.

Never had trouble with a conversation.txt change not being SGC before.  Did you close out of M&B and restart? (I realize that's almost as insulting as did you plug the computer in, but it's the only thing I can think)

I did restart, but as I say, maybe there is something wrong with what I've implemented - I used the one from the TWEAK thread.

I tried altering the tweak a little and I got the conversation option... but yeah... we'll just say it didn't turn out right.  <.<

Ok guys thanks for your input. I thought it would add more colour to the story to have the warriors in a tournament have a more individual feel just like in a real medieval tournament. However i like the idea of duels, that is very cool.

Tournament are great. I just dont participate in horse archery tournament.

Somebody wrote somewhere in the forum that you could get a reward by winning tournament, well i won lots of them and never got a piece of it.

I've gotten a striped panelled armour, a shield and once a gold cobalt plate but my inventory was full for the latter (shame since it's probably rare and strong).

I honestly don't know what triggered getting a piece of equipment in addition to the winning, but I know it doesn't SEEM consistent.

Ahhh Ha! I believe i know under what circumstances this occurs as i have got similar objects out of it. You get free stuff when it is just you and a faction lord in the last round of the tournament and you beat him.

I find it more likely that it's a dice with just a real lots of sides and only one number giving an item.
