tournament as itinerant village

I know tournaments of some kind of have been suggested often, and to some extent catered to by the Arena's, but I had another idea for an implementation of a more complex tournament environment.

A tournament, as a physical place, was quite large, and best represented by a map at least the scale of one of the villages. This map is essentially menu and environment for taking part in minigames (see other thread) which are related to the tournament, such as a cavalry melee with blunt weapons, a joust and whatnot.

But it would be silly to have this in one place on the map, so instead perhaps it should appear on the map temporarily as an icon of pavilions or similar.  It can then manifest near any given city at random or on a schedule.

One feature of tournaments should be that you can choose to fight noble lords, partly for the xp, partly for the fun of it, partly to help recognition on the battlefield.

Quests and so forth can be linked back to this temporary map, obliging you to participate or to find some lord who is participating.

Yes, please.
With a proper jousting with lances setup too.(You know, with the wooden partition in the middle, like in the films..)

The idea of breaking up the Arena combat into

- Jousting (1vs1, Mounted, with lances)
- Melee (Team vs. Team, On foot - maybe with 1 or 2 mounted, with two-handed sword or sword/shield. No lances!)
- Archery (Up to 8 compeditors vs. archery targets, 3 arrows each, best shot wins)

definitely interests me. The number of times a character of mine with a reputation as a famous swordsman/knight gets given a BOW in arena melees... well, it does seem strange, not to mention that a bow seems a bit too lethal to use against other people in a mock battle.

Fantastic.

I agree.

Except for one thing:

Archery with blunt arrows in a tournament wouldn't be any more lethal than a lance would it?

Possibly maybe. I feel the setup we have right now, with fixed arenas in cities are adequate for now. Wouldn't mind them travelling around the country, but I feel it shouldn't currently be a priority for the dev team.

Absolutely yes, knights did participate, at least in jousting, and this would add immersion to the game.

Didn't quite understand this part. Do mean challenging a lord and then wait for the tournament to arrive at his city?
Maybe not.

The idea would be making traveling to the tournament on such and such a day a specific quest exercise.  Which is both historically appropriate and adds a bit more mission meat.  Quite a number of nobles toured Europe going from tournament to tournament.

And seeing as the pavillion is only in its place for one game day, you would have to get there during that day and do whatever you came to do; compete for fun and profit or fulfill quests and stuff.

No suggestion should be a priority for the dev team, but the point is to advance suggestions for their consideration.  The game is so much like I have long wanted a game to be I have every confidence to make the best of whatever ideas we present.  Having the tournament as a single map which spawns in multiple locations is actually a simple way of doing them.

Wouldn't recognition from the tournaments help you in your friendships with other nobles?  For example, if you trounce other factions best men, wouldn't they be more demoralized to fight against you on the field?

And maybe there should be an option to "throw" a tournament, so that a fellow noble doesn't lose to you, granting a boost in friendship?

Of course, there would need to be prizes to consider (ex:  A full suit of armor, a nice crafted sword, money, prestige, land).

That'd be really cool to have ingame.

there could be a quest 'x made me look like a fool, kick his ass in a tourney to make him look bad as revenge'

i spent a whole 20 seconds on that one

Maybe there could also be an "accident" that could happen during the tournament.  A horse could throw a shoe.  The lance could break at just the wrong angle.  The armor was of "inferior" quality.  Could be a nice thing to do if one of your fellow nobles/enemy noble is getting too well recognized by the king, making you a little jealous for his lands, maybe also something helpful in igniting a war, if you kill a noble of high standing of another faction.  Of course, this could get you barred from the tournaments for a while. If you were confident in your skills, you could maybe "frame" a noble in trying to kill you, by giving him some advantage and "convieniently" making this known (after you beat him, of course).

That seems like it may be fun, although I don't really know about that last post..

Maybe though, you could be favored by a lady for a joust?

Hmm... good idea. Wasn't there a hint of some ladies in v.8.9x, when you asked a location from a lord? Anyway, let's just keep it simple and functioning. I don't think the battle system needs much rework, and if it did, it's not related to tournament discussion.

I like this idea a lot. Especially I like the schedule idea, and relationship effect. The only problem is that beginners need some place to practice, and the arena has been a suitable place for it this far. So... what if Zendar had a minor battle pit, where beginners would be able to sharpen their skills before chasing river pirates. Not like training, because it'd be dull to fight the same guy over and over again, but a little fenced area where ruffians could go and release their frustration  The actual big tournament with lords n' stuff is a bit too harsh place for a 2-10 level character.

Yes!!

This sound really nice because it would add a lot of depth to the game because a lot of quest could be tied to a travelling fair like tournaments this would make mount&blade a lot more fun and exciting for me and hopefully for others to

Really hope this one will be in the next version!
