As a lover of all things infantry-related I was dismayed to find the best (and most difficult - by far) class being underappreciated in the lists which have appeared so far. In order to correct this I have decided to make an analysis of the top 20 infantry by each half of the year & have included a general top 50 list for each year below this. While the tables are obviously more detailed and go into greater detail, it is simply not feasible to do this for 50 players each year, nevermind for each half of the year. Therefore, I hope that the infantry on the top 50 will understand why it has not been possible to include a detailed analysis of their own styles. I would also like to apologise to the many talented infantry who did not quite make my top 50 for each year; I found myself with as many as 100 candidates for some years, but it was simply not possible to include all of them. I hope players can get some nostalgia out of this list as they remember past rivals and superstars that have since stopped playing the game. I intend to go back as far as possible with my analysis, but for the moment have only included the most recent years; updates will come as quickly as I can do them. Suggestions about changes & about players which I may have forgotten/missed are welcome and will be taken into account.
Analysis Tables
Statistical data is useful for some of the categories included in the analysis tables, such as cleaving & impact, but for other categories there is little use for raw data. In these cases, my personal experiences - as well as the experiences of other infantry players - when fighting against or with these players is used as the primary source of information. This is obviously highly opinionated and lacking in the objectivity that some might desire, but there is little that can be done about that; there is simply no way to acquire objective facts for some categories. As a result of this, some people may feel they have been underrated or that their skills in one (or multiple) categories have been neglected; in these cases I can only apologise for not being able to provide an objective measure that would satisfy any concerns.
Top 50 Infantry by Year
The top 50 infantry list takes account of statistics to a greater extent than the analysis tables; here we have a broader scope and can include more players, but also must exclude many viable candidates, which in many cases has resulted in the players with better statistics being included over those with worse statistics. While the upper tiers may seem more agreeable in this sense, I recognise that there are many candidates for tiers 3 and 4 which have been excluded due to number constraints and, if you feel that you are in this position, I suggest that these players comment and provide evidence which I can use to justify their inclusion over someone else. If I had the time and the drive to include a greater number of players we could avoid this problem, but unfortunately I have chosen only to use the top 50 for the sake of my own sanity.
Cleaving - This is the most simple category and the one which has the most basis in statistics. It is a measure of the "killing-power" of an infantry player and their potential to rack up large numbers of kills in each round/set. Players with good cleaving ability will often be seen at the top of the scoreboard, or close to, and will regularly be the highest killing infantry on their team.
Survivability - This category has little to no basis in statistics and is quite subjective. This is a measure of how hard it is for the opposing team to take down a player; players with good survivability know how to position themselves and how to manoeuvre in such a way as to stay alive for as long as possible in each round.
Groupfighting - This category has very little basis in statistics, but is perhaps the most tied to other categories. This is a measure of how comfortable a player is in a groupfight and how easily they are able to switch from target to target without taking damage. Players with a high rating in this category will often be capable of getting many kills in a messy groupfight and will be able to make themselves a difficult target at the same time.
Awareness - This category has almost no basis in statistics, though some might count the deaths of infantry players on open maps as some sort of indicator. However, awareness does not only come into play on open maps and so ratings here are based largely on subjective experiences and the general consensus of the time. The category is quite self explanatory; good players will be able to keep track of their surroundings and avoid being hit in the back by the enemy team.
Tech - Tech refers to the mechanical skill level of an infantry player; this does not just mean their duel level, although that does make up a large part of this rating, but also the number and effectiveness of the "moves" that they have at their disposal. This refers to feints and other techniques that a player employs in battle. The best players in this category are likely to also be duel players who have spent a significant amount of time practising mechanical skills.
Impact - Impact is the most arbitrary category and cannot really be measured in a concrete way. This category is about the "presence" of a player on the battlefield; players who are impactful, whether that be in switching or dealing damage or getting kills or in making their presence known in other ways, have a high rating in this category.
