I took out my CD Drive and replaced it with a DVD drive.  Now, my computer won't boot past the BIOS POST screen and into setup, nor will it boot into Windows (XP).  I've done this before and made it work, but I'm not quite sure how, and it was several months ago.  I tried removing the IDE cable and power from the DVD drive and booting, it still didn't work.  Does anyone have any idea how to help?

Thanks for your time.

Sounds like you've disturbed something else in the case while you were fitting the drive. Make sure everything is seated securely etc.

Also if you get a BIOS beep code try googling it.

I haven't done this **** since high school so I may be wrong here, but is it possible you might have to change the disk boot order? As in HDD -> DVD drive -> floppy or some such? I guess it might be trying to boot from the DVD drive and there's nothing to boot Windows on there.

I'm always afraid to mess with jumpers, as that's what ****ed up my hard drives over the summer.  However, it might be that my boot device priority is ****ed up.  Actually, I know it is, because I was trying to repair XP, so I had my CD drive booting first.  I can't boot into setup to fix that, so I'll probably have to reinstall the CD drive, change the HDD to the first boot device, and then uninstall again, right?

A simple check would be to make sure that the new DVD has the same Master/Slave jumper setting as the old CD rom. Also, is anything else on the IDE that the DVD is on?

Unless the IDE cable has autodetection, in which case it needs to be set to "cable select"
