Too much polish!

Grandmaster Knight
So something that a friend of mine said that the game looked to polished to him in comparison to playing on Direct x7, and I thought about it. I used to always play MM on Direct x7 and though I was jealous of those who could play on Direct x9 because I couldn't, but now I can. And I do. However, I realise that even though it is nice to have such good graphics, it looks far too polished. I have turned HDR mode on so that the colours are much more subdued, and that has helped a lot. However, there is still much too much gleam on everything, it's all much too pristine.

I don't want a dirty look on uniforms, I just want the game to be slightly less shiny. You know, the metal parts, shako plates, bayonets, I think it'd be nice to find a lighting effect that makes it slightly less dull, because the metal isn't going to gleam on a rainy day. So, are there any packs out there that would be able to do this? Is there an effect I can put on, in the files somewhere?

I think there's a reflections option somewhere but I'm not quite sure, I'll post a bit later and tell you in detail.

I can't remember HRD mode ever subduing colours, but it will definitely be the reason for the gleam you speak of. Just turn it off, I don't know what else you can do (except re-texture things).

I find that when I have HDR mode on the colours are less bright and seem a lot more dull. But I have only just turned HDR mode on today, and I see no difference in the gleam.

I prefer to HDR enabled just not because it looks alot nicer graphically-wise, but it also enhance your gameplay as with HDR you're able to snap up objects and players alot more easily with shadows, reflections etc. which will generally make you a better player on the battlefield (very useful with inooming cavalry, cannons as they're more visible when fired upon with).

Furthermore DX7 doesn't really work as well with a high resolution because the refresh frequency on DX7 is troubled with keeping up the pace with higher resolutions, which in the end DX9 > DX7, so in the end: Better graphics would be preferable for more competative players.

I agree about the HDR, I tend to notice things a lot easier. As for the Dx9 I also use it because generally it looks better, but I would like a less polished look on everything, nonetheless.

I expected a rant against the Polish. Talk about a misleading title.
Friggin swear!

I must ask, at the risk of looking stupid, what the hell is HDR and how would you go about setting it for the game?

Obviously if I knew the answer to that part of the question I would have included it in my response. I don't turn graphics down usually, so I have no clue.

Options -> Video Options -> HDR Mode
When you turn it on, there are three additional options: High-Contrast Tone Maps, Depth Effects, and Instancing.

The tone map is the one that effects colour saturation.

the latter two exist however there is no HDR mode or high contrast tone maps period.

Assuming the last three options only come up when HDR mode is on ....  wtfbbq moment.

Please post a screenshot showing us how your game looks.

Also, what graphics card are you using? ATI or Nvidia?
