Too much gold for uneven teams, which in turn even further increase gold values. Which lead directly to cavalry spam.

Also, you should really look at gold generation formula.

IIRC, it's:
10 for first melee and ranged kill and up to 3 assists
2 plus ((enemy unit cost - your unit cost)/2 but not less than 0)
20 for first each 5 kills

Which is really dumb if you ask me. If we are at it, can we get half-assists? I hate when i hit someone for over 30 and don't get any gold from it. Also don't like that someone kill my high-cost enemy denying me gold gain.

So, make gold cost more predictable and less swingy.
