Range is useful for blasting them you need a lot of it though once the range is removed you just gotta get in their and destroy them yourself and once your damaged the front near the ladders your men will aid you and you will get in. There is also sometimes damageable doors around the fortress to enter and flank them from behind. The key is to have a lot of strong melee and range to overwhelm the enemy. Greatswords can be pretty good for sieges as long as your good at getting in their and aoiding shots and dodging - they are fast and long, it also depends heavily on the fortress - some take many many days and a lot of determination to beat, some you can beat a large force in one siege
