Don't worry about a huge army until you can support it financially. Use the companions for party skills you don't have on your character.

Note, I haven't played single player since 1.143 so they might have changed a few things. But, basically my recipe for financial stability is this: farm sea-raiders [1] and use the money set up enterprises. Search the forum for "enterprises" for more info, but the gist is that you go to the guild master, ask him to set up an enterprise and just choose whatever is estimated to bring the most profit. Usually it's dyeworks (dyeworks in Rivacheg is a good choice for the first enterprise, and will support a decent army alone). Well chosen enterprises in all the cities used to bring me about 10000 every month (or whatever the paycheck period is in Warband). You can imagine you can support a really fancy army with that much money.

[1] Sea raider farming is systematically hunting down sea-raiders in the northern area (Rivacheg-Wercheg coast). They have the best (and the most expensive) equipment which you can loot and sell afterwards. You can also take them prisoners (for that you will need soldiers with blunt weapons, I go with slavers/manhunters) and sell (they are also the most expensive bandits to sell, 130 apiece I think). Use the money to set up enterprises and buy equipment/support troops. The advantage of this approach over trading is that you and your companions get experience while making money (you don't get experience from trading). And experience and leveling up is crucial for an efficient army.

Sea Raiders will kill any amount of "recruits" and low level troops you have in your army, though, so be prepared.

Yeah. Thanks, X! I guess I should've said it. Definitely train at least level 3-4 troops before taking on sea raiders. In the beginning of the game there are plenty of looters that you can use for that purpose. And investing in the training skill or recruiting companions with training (Lezalit, Firentis(?), ...) is also a good idea. Also, the mercenaries from taverns can be considered if you have trouble raising good troops naturally. I usually first train 15-20 swadian/sarranid horsemen on looters and mountain bandits. Then I go hunting for bandit parties that have manhunters as prisoners. I free and train the man-hunters. 20 Slaver chiefs (top level manhunters) is pretty much all you need to take on any sea-raider gang.

Use only the finest of steels.

A sword that collapses under the burdens of a melee can not bring upon a favourable day

You will have to kill yourself all your enemies for a looong time until you get a decent army.
I remember that I used to start against Mountain Bandits in rhodok lands, hiring crossbows (these can kill enemies, from level 2 and grow up fast) and putting my companions as infantry or cavalry. Put your xbows on a steep hill and fight the enemy yourself close to your xbows fire. Remember to keep decent size army (lower than 20) otherwise you cant flee from a big mob, especially if you have 20 recruits who will die easily. You can now do as many battles against bandits until you have equipped decently yourself and heroes. When there is no more bandit to kill, you can do missions or go in taverns looking for heroes,  and come back. Then go for sea raiders, with a good horse and a xbow in back just in case (small group, with a small army, be careful).

Farming sea raiders works best if you have yourself a blunt weapons, plus rhodok sergent and kerghit lancers also spawn with blunt weapons.

Mamlukes often spawn with 2-handed iron maces. I get a mace myself for "farming" too.

Party skills are absolutely vital. Make sure you have someone in your party who specialize in training, surgery, etc. This will greatly increase your efficiency.

You don't have to recruit a lot of soldiers to win. Recruit some peasants and spar with them on the traininggrounds. It's a good training for you and your soldiers.
