Unlocks and achievements aren't inherently bad - but they don't cover up a poorly made game underneath.
They're little carrots-on-sticks that keep ADD players artificially addicted and playing for a little while longer. They are pretty good tools for helping a game community start off strong (take Battlefield series and TF2 for example).
In Warband, they might implement unlocks by having some cosmetic rewards, like more banners, hairstyles, or facial features to customize your character with.
What would really interest me and keep me playing as a competitive gamer, are more skill-based mechanics (which introduce depth), more counters and counters to counters in melee, and competitive Rocket Arena style modes (possibly teambased).
I would love it if they took the Arena tournament maps from single player and let people have duel tournaments where you fight against players in brackets until you face off against the other champion, possibly with spectators in the stands. Or have arenas where players can organize into small teams/by clan (4v4v4v4), and they duke it out (with one team being eliminated every round) until the two final teams are left, just like in single player.
