At the risk of being an ass, Alex - how many Americans have YOU asked about their opinion?

I'm not sure why you asked me that - I'm not saying that she's wrong, I'm merely saying that I believe that she was wrong to claim that a few polls a thousand strong, shows that the majority of America opposes the reform.

So, we(Europeans) watch too much BBC, SVT, etc then?

Possibly. ^^

Awww, I cannot be angry with Hagbard.

I still fail to see how using a small sample group(which is pretty much SOP) is viewed as not including enough people. There is usually no poll that manages to get a majority of the population to participate.

Performed correctly, with a varied sample group etc, a good survey is remarkablely accurate at providing data regarding where the public opinion lies.

The presidential election just barely manages that

If only it was American Idol.

No, but that is exactly my point. Arguing that the surveys lack numbers seems odd, since there are never enough people participating for it to literally be the majority. Yet, surveys/polls are still viewed as a reliable means of gauging opinions(of course there are guidlines/rules/standards).

Lolmerc, what CA said. That does not represent 'most of America'.

A survey on public opinion is not valid to be applied to a larger scale unless it is taken completely randomly. It can be made more valid if taken from a Bellweather district, which is a district in which the population's division matches that of the larger area. As those surveys were conducted by more than one news agency (CNN, NBC, USA Today, Ipsos/McClatchy, ABC, CBS were first few I saw), and news agencies tend to perform fairly reliable polls, I would say that it is accurate and representative of America, particularly as each shows a similar result. It is a perfectly good inference, then, that it can represent most of America.

Also, concluding that a survey of 1,200 adults nationwide in a properly conducted poll is inaccurate throws most polls out the window, as the majority of polls on national issues are done on samples of that size.

Merc, you and me should breed and produce socialist hating children, thus helping our cause. It'd purely be political, the sex, so it's totally cool.

And Kobrag could apply some much needed religion from behind to add to your politisex.

Well done

And hey, a body elected by the majority of Americans just voted this bill through, I don't see how you can argue that it's not representative of public opinion... unless of course you think the USA's constitution isn't democratic?

Is that a hint hint knudge knudge wink wink? Can you put America and democracy in the same sentence while keeping a straight face?

No, it's a "Can a patriotic American admit that his or her system of government isn't perfect?"

I'm passing no judgement as of yet.

Im sure there are a few old enough in wisdom to realize that Uncle Sam (like most personified world powers) is a butt ****er and that sitting on his lap of unquestioning patriotism might be a tad naive.
