Just gonna put this out there in the midst of all the hating.

This game is my new addiction.  I like the time period in which the game takes place in.  I damn near wanted to learn Polish or finish learning Russian when this game first came out in E. Europe back in '09 and then buy it.

The only thing that I can find to hate is that it made my weekend disappear very fast.

There is still not any game out that is anything like the M&B series.  Thank you Taleworlds.

You're being a little vague.  What part of the game do you specifically like and how do you get there.

What is your initial strategy, and how do you develop funds early?  What faction do you prefer, and which mercenaries do you use?

What is your end game experience?  How do you build your character, and what is your army size at end game?

I'd appreciate answers.

There are several simple little guides around the forums for how to get rich in the beginning. One of which I did up, which tells you how to become rich within an hour of starting.

The answers to the rest of your questions seem very similar to how you might answer those same questions concerning warband, but of course you aren't asking me.

I created this thread to express that I like the game, not to be a guide.  You can go elsewhere for that.

i think the game is fun too.  however, much of the complaining on these forums is legitimate.

it's not really fun until you do some caravan "grinding" to establish a base of funds.  no other method works - the amount you get from raiding, selling prisoners etc is a pittance, plus every item is exorbitantly expensive, so you must shuttle caravans for the first 40 minutes or so for every game before you can even start doing anything fun.

the quests in general are unclear and difficult to follow, and at worst, are in some cases bugged.  completely unrelated things will have consequences, e.g. starting the 'black mace' quest will not allow you to become a vassal for anyone with no clear reason why.

reknown is a pain to get - it's another "grind" gateway stat.  you need 200 or so to really do anything with the factions, and for most people on hard the most you can safely gain per battle is 5 or so.  related to this is the fact that your party size is going to be perpetually below the average no matter what you do which forces you to use exploits to capture towns and castles and such.

Are you playing English version?
Yes. The international release.  If they had an English version of the previous releases I am not gonna be happy because I could not find them.

I doubt that anyone but you would assume that I need or want a guide.

I'm asking you for some answers to how you play, so that we all understand what a person who enjoys the game chooses as his path.

If you can't or won't answer that, then it leaves your statements a little suspect, and vague as I said earlier.

Again, and note that my tone is civil - I'm interested in your answers.

In theory your tone is civil. In practice it's actually a bit douchey. Something to think about

Nice to meet you, too.

Seems like you are asking him to prove to you that he enjoys the game, and that he has played the game enough for you to consider it valid. At least that's my take on it.

I disagree completely. I didnt do any caravans because i thought it would make things to easy and am currently running my own empire (without any of their troops... bugs:sad: )but i also have black armor and the best helmet along with more then 120 in every castle i own (all of sweden)

You had some legitimate points, but these two just aren't true.  You can do quite fine without every sending caravans.  I've sent maybe 3 in my entire campaign so far and I have plenty of money.  The idea that you need to grind caravans for 40 minutes is incredibly silly.  I honestly can't think of why that idea would even to occur to anyone in the beginning of the game.

I'm not sure what exactly you mean by "do anything" with the factions, but with good relations you can become a vassal with less than 40 renown.

Ok, I'll show mine if you show me yours.

I've played two serious games - one starting as a leader type which didn't work out due to how renown gains work - the second was a pure hero, all str/agi.

The hero game, I started out doing a few missions, and getting enough troops to do escorts for mayors.  This took me to about 9/10 pretty fast.

Then with my 2-3k I had saved up, I bought up velvet that I found for sale for 120, and ran it to the crazy swedes who pay 1500+ for it.

That gave me money enough to run some velvet and spice caravans.

With that money, I invested in some top notch siege mercs, and a heavy set of armor - a good horse, pistol and a heavy chekan for fighting armored guys.

I'd been training up one of my NPCs to have engineering skill, so I waited until the Crimeans were on the ropes and then laid siege to perekop, which has a nice peninsula behind it if I ever decide to expand that way.

My first attempt was a failure - but somehow I came away with a ton of reknown for even attempting it so my party size went from 72 max to 100 max as I was limping away from the battle.  With the extra 30 guys I was able to take out the defenders.  It was a crazy badass fight, too.  I ended up pulling my last 20 guys into a tower and making them hold there while the enemy's last 50 guys tried to root us out.

I rushed and shot the last defender in the head with my 40 speed pistol while he was reloading his musket.  Felt pretty good.

The crimeans are in such poor shape they are in no shape to attempt to retake it, and I am right now building up defenses and filling my garrison.

From what I recall, fortresses are much less likely to make people hate you for holding them than cities so I chose the fortress.

I sued for peace with the crimeans and they accepted, so for now I have a holding and at peace with everyone.  We'll see how that goes.

I wish I could train my cavalry to jump the walls of those wagon forts.

I agree with you.  Khanate Horse Archer here, pretty much make tons of money checking on velvet/spice/dies/salt whenever im in perekop or kafa, and then riding it out to moscow or reval.  Having hard time progressing missions, but I dont really understand the renown system.  I can def beat any standing army up to 70 men more then me.  Give this a few more patches (and FIX RECRUITING IN CITIES, I buy 30 troops, tab out, and have 0 more guys with -2000 gp) and this game will be awesome.

It does bother me that all the quests are repeats from brytenwalda though.

I was quite frustrated with the game at first, after unfortunate losses and massive loan debts...

But after reading how to make easy money (abusing velvet caravans) it's much more satisfying . The economic side of the game definitely needs to be looked at because apart from caravans (which are far too easy) it's nearly impossible to make enough money for upkeep, let alone being able to afford to equip your hero and companions.

With firearms the combat is much more brutal, but thanks to the mercenary camps it's much easier to replenish your forces and because the equipment upgrades are separate from a unit's experience level it's much less painful to lose troops. Very expensive though  which takes us back to the money problems.

How did you make your money? I'd really like to know a way other than caravans. Most quests only seem to award between 200 and 600 thaler, and combat tends to cost me more in replacing troops than it earns me in loot.

I have not gotten around to recruiting from cities yet but I read somewhere that it takes 2-3 game days for them to arrive.
