They formed up

I have often felt like the AI would be better if they would simply just have the infantry bunch up a little as opposed to the common one man line. However this happened the other day as the nords charged my position.

Just a mistake while charging or does the AI give the order to stand closer. They advanced in the single line formation

Maybe you were in a corner of the map and the AI didn't have enough space to form a single line?

OH NO!!!! THE NORDS HAVE DEVELOPED PHALANX TECHNOLOGY!!! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!!!!

seriously though, Huscarls + Phalanx=steamroll over everyone. I'd join them if I were you.

I wasn't int he corner, I was about 50 paces away from the beginning slightly to left but not the corner.  It didn't work though because I was leading the charge of my shock infantry, Vaegir Guards are pretty good on the first strike when it isn't that bad they don't use shields.

The other day I was in a battle with a few fellow lords. I'm a Rhodok through and through, but whenever I fight alongside an ally, I have to have me army follow me as I follow them in their single line. However, this time was different. They formed two lines! But that's not all. One of the lines was an archer line! And it was on top of a hill!

The "advance 10 paces" does that.

I had a heck of a time against a Nord warlord. My entire army consisted of Vaegir archers (Marksmen, mostly) and my 16 companions. The map was pretty soft rolling hills with decent-sized valleys. The Nord army circles for like 15 minutes as I move my troops to strategic points, but they don't charge until I get fed up and attack the Jarl. I had to retreat and GTFO because my Marksmen were no match at all for any of his infantry. I lost a quarter of my army when I got out of there, and was able to avoid him on the world map. Thank God he didn't go to reinforce Knudarr Castle (well, they did, but nobody went in and strengthened the garrison). I had about 3-5 Jarls trying to scare me off. I still managed to capture Knudarr Castle and, briefly, revolted and made my own kingdom before joining Nords (albeit temporarily; my next planned move is to take Dhirim and the castles surrounding it--I'll need a lot of money and a few hundred more troops to do that. Odds are that Ragnar will not give me any of the three garrisons much less the ~7 villages, so I'll have to take them for myself and then rejoin a faction--perhaps Swadia).
