I hear three bolts being shot and I'm quite sure none of them hit the target. The bolt player shot already took almost half of the horse health so all I can see is that ai is dumb dumb that can't use op doomsday weapon.

exactly, all the more so as this is how it was done on the DLC Napoleonic Wars of Mount and Blade Warband

It's both. Horses are way too tanky and the AI is not very good at leading shots. A crossbow bolt to a horses face should be "goodnight Irene".

It's a combination of only three units firing and missing, me shooting a horse point blank in the face and it being completely unphased, and then finally the ultra late massive burst fire that was entirely directed at 1 target. If there are multiple enemies in an area the AI will uniformly lock onto a single target rather that evenly focusing them. You can see at the end they all start chasing after the captain on foot while the guy on horse casually continues to circle around picking people off.

Well, cavalry is a natural counter to archers but not when used like in that video. Those horses should all have died.

Somebody get a real horse and shoot it with a 1000 pound draw weight arbalest and see if it keeps charging towards you. If someone asks say it was so you can prove a point on a video game forum and they will understand. Sad!
