The White Aiming Reticule of Annoyingness.

Of course, we all know how helpful that little white circle, which breaks up into 3 nice little triangles with colored tips, is very, very handy. However, when we're riding around in the snowy vaegir territory, aiming that bow is extremely difficult. So, might I suggest a certain degree of customization? Perhaps (of course, this isn't one of those "OMG WE NEED IT NOW MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE!!!" kind of things, but it would make for a nice, small update) there could be a button you click in the Options menu, that brings up the "Reticule Customization" menu, which has things ranging from a list of different crosshairs, to the 3 R/G/B 255 color bars.

Nobody likes not being able to see their reticule, especially when the enemy is right on top of them. So please, give us the option to make those neon blue crosshairs of super aiming goodness!

You can always turn it off!

But I see you're point... ahem. I think there should be maybe a selection of different reticles. It does seem a tad unrealistic... but how do you make it better?

How would changing the color of a reticule make the game less realistic? In real life, if you're aiming a gun, you don't see these crosshairs magically appear. All reticules are NOT real.

Changing the color of it would be fun, too. I would like a nice blood red one, with spikes n stuff.

Or a reticule that pulses blood red every time you make a hit, and if it's a lot of damage, then a spurt of blood actually squirts out the reticule

You miss my point...

I'm not saying that a different coloured reticule is less realistic than the white one... just the reticule in general is unrealistic - for bows anyway.

What I am getting at is the way the 3 points of the reticule come together - it's not bad, but there has to be something better... perhaps something to indicate the strength of the pull to gauge distance (y axis) and a small vertical bar to indicate the x axis.

meh.. I'm thinking more Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory-style.

Perhaps your reticule could change color depending upon your health. If you're health is above 75%, you're reticule is Green to Green-yellow, depending on how low it is. Above 50% is Yellow to Yellow-Orange, depending on how low it is. Above 25%, and it's Orange to Red-Orange, depending on how low it is. Above 1%, and it would be Red, a darker red depending on how low it is. Less than 1%... and you're dead. But really, depending on how low it is.

(p.s. all of the "depending on how low it is." parts of the sentance are in a perfectly straight line in the "Post a Reply" box. Don't blame me if there are too many. It looks cool.)

You have to be kidding me. You actually turn the reticule off?? I will try it some time. For those of you who say the reticule is "unrealistic", I disagree. It may be abstract, but it represents something that is realistic: the ability to aim. If you turn the reticule off, you have no ability to aim, because a 3d game doesn't well simulate the things we have naturally, such as depth perception and selective focus. If there were a slightly better 1st person angle using the bow and crossbow, I would then say it's more realistic to turn the reticule off. For crossbows, this would mean being able to look down the shaft of the crossbow. For bows this would mean using your thumb (or a notch on the grip) as a sight, as well as being able to tell by sound and animation when your drawing arm has reached full draw. If I had these, I would definitely turn the reticule off. My usefulness would go down at first, but it would be a lot of fun teaching myself to remaster these weapons.

This would also add another aspect of realism, actually. As it stands, looking at the reticule means that you are able to fire a bow with 100% precision, because you are always able to fire it when the reticule reaches its "zero state". This is uncannily unrealistic! It means you become Robin Hood early in the game (although your player skill may still need work). If armagan ever gets the notion to implement my aiming ideas above, then I would forego the reticule. He could even have the "reticule enabled" setting decrease the % difficulty of the game by like 10% or something. This might encourage more players to try it out for a challenge. Of course, for third person aiming, the reticule would still be necessary. But, we all know that third person players are sissies....

I just think "doddle" for lack of a better word, needs to be added. Basically instead of the 3 triangles have the reticule, swim around a bit on the screen, the higher your skill, the less the reticule moves. Think og it as how a scope works on my modern army games.

Also a 2 toned reticule would work a lot better, or heck just turn it purple....

It's just a texture, change it yourself if you like.

Eh, you can still aim with it off. It's just harder. You aim based on where the arrow tip is positioned rather than where the reticule point is.

I like it. Would be great to customize the recticle in the way you're describing with the R/G/B bars.

Anyone played Freespace 2? Great space sim game? You can fully customize your HUD in almost any way you want and I found that to be a very attractive and friendly feature to have, specifying anything in whichever color you want.

You should do the same thing my brother did. He drew a dot with a magic marker to the center of his monitor so that he can aim with sniper rifles without using the zoom. Yep, he's fanatical.

Haha I know of somebody who had a 'dead pixel' EXACTLY where their counter-strike rifle would center at. If I remember, he sold the monitor for 3 times its original price to some CS fan lol

Arguing whether a rectile is realistic or not is plain dumb. (I'm sorry, I hope I didn't offend anyone with this ::(
No matter how 3D you make a game, it will still appear on the 2D monitor, at which you look at from a distance. Recticle is there to balance this reality INTO the virtual game on the computer.

I think the reticule could be used as a "health indicator" on your enemies. the green 100-75%, yellow 75-50%, gold/orange 50-25%, red 25-1%. it could be useful if u want to search for wounded units.
