The tower of sandbagitude

So in v1.51, there will be deployable sandbags, kind of like the chevaux de frise. While playtesting them, Valmy and I made a tower. Here it is.

And before you all whine and complain (and I know you will), this was just a bit of fun. It won't be possible to do this in the official release.

I can safely say that Argus will not approve of that.

O dear god have mercy on my soul.

We should just re-title this "build a fort mod."

As much as I would love to see these things on occasion, I don't want EVERY game to be a bunker battle. And I assure you, that's what it'll be. Forget fighting in the open - or an equal terms, unless those "equal terms" entail a bunch of fools exchanging inaccurate fire from behind bunkers for the entire round.

I have not played one round where I did not see a fort constructed of Chevaux de Frise. And I have not played one round where at least one team did not take up a defensive position - not counting a few rounds that we played on The Arena, with only 3-5 people. I do not think most people realize just how much this will change game-play.

Is it possible to have two forms of play - one which is just a "Battle" (without these things), and another one which is "Attack/Defend" where people can construct these defenses? As fun as it may be in moderation, it's just going to get really old otherwise.

(Sorry to keep you guys waiting. I hope my rant lived up to your expectations )

Make them more expensive
Make server starting gold 100

This means that they're actually worth something. Chevaux de frise or a bayonet? Most people would choose the bayonet, and you'd need a good k/d ratio to keep the chevaux. The 100 starting gold would fix a lot of balance issues in the mod (I'm looking at you, pistols).

So you would rather every game be "defend the fort"?  :???:

And, I quite like simple, open maps. I was even going to great lengths to make one. But if people can build forts anywhere and everywhere they please, it kind of becomes pointless. Every map now has cover, and game-play will be limited to assaulting a team behind bunkers, often from behind your own bunkers.

World War I, anyone?

Again, could be solved with just setting the starting gold to 100 and lowering gold/kill. Chevaux won't be worth getting unless you've already got the best stuff - and you'll have been in the server for awhile before that happens.

I'd pick the chevaux de frise over a bayonet anyday !

Actually, I suppose I would be for making them very expensive (considering, especially, that so many items are free now). That way, they could be deployed in small numbers after a long game, but only then, and in limited number. Anything that essentially modifies the field of battle, and all game-play to that extent should not be so easily obtained.

It's not really a good solution, but at very least it would make sure that they aren't abused so badly. I still cringe at the possibility of seeing them on every map, every round, all of the time, though.

I think it's too early to tell whether or not barricades are a good thing. Let's just wait and see what happens.

Also, v1.51 will be ready for upload shortly. It fixes the pistol error message (and the pistol sound), the missing Swedish cuirassier horse, as well as improving the chevaux de frise and adding two new barricade types.

Here's a brief video showcasing the barricades: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9WXt-cKfLU.
