The MotherBoard it has is a ASUS P5S800-VM/S (No idea if this sort of MotherBoard is still relevant/useful to modern hardware today.)

Searching for reviews indicates that it dates from at least as far back as 2004  I wouldn't bank on using the tower for a modern build if it is as old as its contents, since it may not have the correct dimensions to accommodate modern components. I could be wrong about that though, I am no expert on PC building.

I have an old-but-good case I can't reuse because PSU was in that time at the top instead of bottom, and the screw holes don't match modern ones.

Currently have an i5-4460 @3.2GHz. You guys think it would be worth going to the Ryzen 1700? The 1700 has a lower standard clock speed, but me thinks there is room to push that higher.

Or is 1700x the way to go?

Thoughts?

Don't be an early adopter.

In 3D testing I did recently on Windows 10, the title which illustrated the biggest SMT regression was Total War: Warhammer.

All of these were recorded at 3.5GHz, 2133MHz MEMCLK with R9 Nano:

Windows 10 - 1080 Ultra DX11:

8C/16T - 49.39fps (Min), 72.36fps (Avg)
8C/8T - 57.16fps (Min), 72.46fps (Avg)

Windows 7 - 1080 Ultra DX11:

8C/16T - 62.33fps (Min), 78.18fps (Avg)
8C/8T - 62.00fps (Min), 73.22fps (Avg)

W7 is not even officially supported, yet works better with Ryzen multithreading?...
I've lost track of the many issues of firmware/software simply not ready to work properly with Ryzen, there is a lot of ironing to do.

My current CPU runs like a dog when running unity, photoshop, blender, and others, all at once. I suspect that a Ryzen would have a better go at it. Baking a navmesh or a lightmap in Unity takes like 90% of my CPU alone.

But you're right, perhaps ill wait a month or so.

That sounds like an issue with the OS being complete garbage rather than the hardware.

It's not like its an entirely new processor.. it just works with Win7 just like any other x86-64 CPU works with Win7.. Win10 is just crap.

Ended up ordering a pc from PC Specialist, just waiting for it to be delivered now.

Naturally going up to a 64bit.

Cancel order or send it back. That CPU is from 2012 and wasn't very good even back then.

I bought my system almost 5 years ago and upgraded it when it was necessary.
First when I got it in 2012

CPU        AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Ed
RAM      G.SKILL RipjawsX DDR3-1600Mhz CL9 8GB (2x4GB)
CASE      THERMALTAKE VM600M1W2Z DOKKER BlacX
HDD      SEAGATE ST1000DM003 Barracuda 1TB 64MB 7200rpm
GPU        SAPPHIRE HD7850
PSU        OCZ OCZ600MXSP-EU ModXStream Pro Serisi 600W 80+
MoBo      ASROCK 990FX Extreme3 AMD 990FX, DDR3, AM3+

I used the stock fan for a while and after getting sick of it I decided that I needed to do some additions to my system.
so in 2013 I got these parts:

SSD            Neutron GTX Series 2.5 120GB
DVD RW      ASUS DRW-24B5ST-19 24X
CPU Cooler  XIGMATEK S1283 Red Scorpion 120mm
Case Fans  THERMALTAKE AF0018 120mm ISGC x 2

In early 2016 I got another pair of rams of the exact same one I already had in my system.

RAM      G.SKILL RipjawsX DDR3-1600Mhz CL9 8GB (2x4GB)

In early 2016 my GPU decided to die by giving me artifact error.I was in a hurry and had to get a gpu asap. Also one of my inner fans decided to die aswell.Changed it with one of the others I had.

So I got:

GPU      MSI GTX 970 GAMING 4G GTX970

In february this year I decided that my system needed an upgrade. So I got

MoBo    MSI Z270 GAMING PRO CARBON INTEL Z270
CPU fan    COOLER MASTER HYPER 612 Ver.2
CPU          INTEL Core i7-7700K Kaby lake 4.20GHz
RAM          HyperX Fury Black DDR4-2400Mhz C15 16GB (2x8GB)

My System as of now looks like this :

MoBo      MSI Z270 GAMING PRO CARBON INTEL Z270
CPU fan      COOLER MASTER HYPER 612 Ver.2
CPU            INTEL Core i7-7700K Kaby lake 4.20GHz
RAM            HyperX Fury Black DDR4-2400Mhz C15 16GB (2x8GB)
PSU            OCZ OCZ600MXSP-EU ModXStream Pro Serisi 600W 80+
SSD            Neutron GTX Series 2.5 120GB
HDD            SEAGATE ST1000DM003 Barracuda 1TB 64MB 7200rpm
DVD RW      ASUS DRW-24B5ST-19 24X
CASE          THERMALTAKE VM600M1W2Z DOKKER BlacX
GPU            MSI GTX 970 GAMING 4G GTX970

Bold parts are the new ones and italic ones are something oldish newish

With the old parts I am planning on making a media pc . Hopefully ,eventually, one of these days ,perhaps, maybe I will get to it

I guess I'll drop this here.

Intel announced it is working with rival AMD to build a new Core processor with custom Radeon graphics inside the chip package, with an emphasis on gaming performance.

Looking at the current crop of gaming laptops on the market, Intel said it recognized an opportunity to build thinner, lighter, and more powerful enthusiast mobile platforms aimed at delivering a premium experience.
"Currently, most enthusiast mobile PCs have Intel Core H-series processors plus higher-powered discrete graphics, resulting in systems that average 26mm in height. Compare this to thin and light laptops that are trending down to 16mm or less, with some even as thin as 11 mm. We wanted to find a way to improve this," Intel said.

Well, that's something I wasn't expecting to read about this morning.

It's a strategic move by Intel to compete in the high end laptop market against Nvidia and AMD to license out their proven product for profit and PR.

AMD APUs are targeting the low end laptop market where Intel's HD graphics has been being destroyed for years. Now with AMD's competitive CPU, there is no reason to buy a low end Intel laptop. So Intel is now going to replace their aging high end Iris GPUs with AMD's actual graphics cores, which should completely destroy Nvidia on the price front due to AMDs APU technology allowing close cooperation between CPU and GPU with low TDP. And presumably do something about the low end. Who knows.

I bought mine 2 years ago. It was cheap and has served me well. No complaints.

But buying one now is pretty silly. You should be able to get a much better CPU for a decent price.

Eastern Europe approves.

So, please bear with me.
I have a low-end Lenovo G500 from 2014. It's not totally suited for more recent games, which a thing I have taken in consideration before buying it, but since I don't have the budget to buy myself a new one, I was wondering whether a +4Gb RAM upgrade would make a difference in games like Total War: Attila (right now, it averages 20 FPS on the campaign map and goes to 30-40 in battle al the crappiest settings possible).

The specs are as follows:
Intel Pentium 2020M, x2 at 2.4 GHz
4Gb RAM
AMD HD 8570, 1Gb, 825MHz

Is a +4Gb RAM upgrade really worth it? How much of a difference would that make?

No difference. If you're limited on RAM the effect is stuttering rather than low FPS, because the system will use hard drive space as RAM, which is much slower.

So, as far as I understand, the main issue here is the GPU and CPU?
I guess I really need to start saving more...
