The thread that is now the unofficial PC builds thread :P

Looks fine now. You'll have a great rig!

Choice of graphics card depends also on what games you plan to play in which resolution. For 1080p, a RX 480 will be enough in most cases. For 1440p, I'd rather go for a GTX 1070.

Seems like my GPU died (graphic artifact on BIOS, can't load Windows on normal mode, more artifact on safe mode)

Looking for something reasonable cheap, so far seems the RX 480 is giving the best price/value, but I'm not sure the extra 8GB of RAM is worth +50€ over the 4GB. Also, which brand?

8GB is standard as of this generation so you're cutting it short going anything less. Brand doesn't matter that much as long as it is not a blower type cooler.

On second thought... I'm still using a 6-7 years old computer, never spent more than 150€ in a single component. Going almost to 300€ for the GPU is a bit pricey for me, even my screen doesn't allow more than 60FPS, forget about 144 for a few years

So it seems my options are 1050 TI for ~180€ or the RX 480 4GB for 239€

Nothing in that price range will come close to 144 fps on anything except 2d games. RX 480 is a tier above the 1050Ti in terms of raw processing power, it is a considerably better choice. The 1050Ti primarily competes with the RX 470, if you're looking for approximate equivalents.

After sleeping on it, I've decided I must stay on budget

Best prices I've found
1050Ti 4G OC 170€
MSI RX 470 Gaming 4G 192€
Sapphire Radeon RX 480 4GB Nitro+ GDDR5 219€

What worries me is the RX 480 power draw issue. It seems the card should have been a 8 pin from the very beginning, claiming is a 150W when it peaks 169W. The driver update is not a fix, is a patch

This fix was actually the first we tested from AMD, though it wasn’t enough to alleviate the problems with power draw from the PCI Express connection. This adjustment does nothing to change the weighting of power draw from the two +12V sources and instead only focuses on lower total power draw of the GPU. Yes, this does mean that there are going to be some cases where performance drops, though I have seen articles talking about performance increases with undervolting.

AMD indicates that we should think of this setting as a secondary solution, one that is NOT enabled by default, for any users that might be overly concerned about power and current draw on their motherboard or power supply. As I will show you in our testing, the differences in power draw are definitely measurable, and performance seems to be impacted minimally in the couple of spot checks we have done.

The power draw issue is not going to hurt you at all for multiple reasons.

1. the 150W limit is not strict, it's not going to blow up under normal usage.
2. the card performs better when undervolted due to temperature constraints.
3. It will never draw full power outside of synthetic benchmarks.

Here is a comparison of the 470 vs the 1050Ti, they really aren't on the same level:
http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-1050-Ti-vs-AMD-RX-470/3649vs3640

And then the comparison between 470 and 480 is much tighter:
http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/AMD-RX-480-vs-AMD-RX-470/3634vs3640

If money is a major issue, you should just wait and save up enough to get a higher tier card than the 1050Ti, it is in a very bad place compared to AMDs 470 for almost the same price, while the 470 is in a very good place compared to the 480 when considering their price difference.

I think it was tomshardware that said the 480 was drawing more than 150w playing Witcher, not testing. A GPU that reaches 80°C without OC (precisely the one I posted) doesn't sound to me very appealing. Noisy.
I can't wait because I can barely use the computer now. I have to use Windows in safe mode with a weird resolution. I'm not upgrading now by my own decision
I guess I'll take that 470, I think I'll live with 5 less  FPS

You get something around 75 Watt through your pcie Slot, If I remember right.
Don't you know cards without any external power connectors??? (think of passive cooled cards, or pcie SSDs, HardwareRAIDController, Soundcards...)

So you get 150 + 75 = 225 Watt.

There are many cards who are designed differently. Some have more power phases for (theoretical) better OC, some have more/bigger fans, different cooling ....
I am sure there are other cards who are performing quieter and colder. "Best price" is not always a good choice in my oppinion. Sometimes it is worth paying 20-50€ more just for a more quiet graphics card.

RX 470 installed and tested with Unigine Heaven, score almost identical to what Tech Porn got. What I don't understand is the power consumption. They got 208, I got 92  :???:

Skyrim:SE recommended from Low to Ultra, yay

So I am saving some money for a new gaming pc as mine is getting older and it's really not doing well these days. I think the last days of my PC are going in.

What I wanted to ask is, what are the best specifications on the market today? Motherboard, Sound card, cooling system and all that stuff.  I am going for the Gtx 1080 from Nvidia so that is already noted.

Any ideas?

Well I'm very bad at iT and building PC's haha.

I have a budget of 3,5K euros. and just one monitor. But that link you gave me, that pc.

Do you know which games it can max out? Cause it seems a good one.

With a 3.5k Euro PC you should get to max pretty much everything.

ps: don't ever spend that much on a computer

True, I have seen better pc's which actually don't cost 3000 euros. I'm just trying to build a pc that could easily max out battlefield 1 and stuff on 70+ Fps

You could also try www.pcpartpicker.com, that's where I mess around with PC builds the most.

For instance, this funny concept I worked on with a friend:
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/YpTTVY

Which all fits in the oddball case seen here (though the partpicker build doesn't match the one seen in this album):

I have tried to build a good gaming PC. And I have these results. Any suggestions or ideas?

if you have a old (older) computer you should start by selecting a new monitor(s). Do you want HD, 1440p, 4k ... ? 1, 2 or 3? Having 2 or 3 monitors work great for many games, and it will enhance your experience. Or a bigger monitor (depends on the distance you are from the controls, etc). From there you can select your GPU (and decide if you need a SLI or not), and so on.

Its quite easy to max games at HD now. Not soo much for 4k
