The Story

I'm sticking this in Suggestions because it's likely going to lead to some commentary along those lines.

But I'd like to start with a question: What format is a "story" going to take in this game?

Is it going to be a linear story where you contact particular NPCs and do what they want so the narrative is advanced?

Is it going to be a nonlinear story where you can make choices that set up branching, alternative, narratives to be advanced?

Is it going to be an emergent story where random elements conspire to create a subjective narrative particular to each fresh game one starts?

Those seem to be the main stylistic choices I've encountered in game design so far. I'd tend to suspect the latter would be the best way to do things in an engine like Mount & Blade. It's set up around a dynamic package as it is and working in emergent storylines and random seeds would compliment gameplay remarkably well.
