The Introduction

Hi.

I am Mysterious_A. And I am a noob modeller.

I've modelled for a while (not too long a while, though). But my efforts have thus far been chaotic and disorganized, not really promoting any improvement. That is why I consider myself a noob modeller.

That is also why I've started this thread.

I, Mysterious_A, noob modeller, am seeking improvement through practice, so that I might one day rise up to the standards of this forum's finest 3d artists. For that purpose, I begin this thread and project.

Which brings me to...

The Project

If you survived through that awful introduction, you deserve a treat (have a cookie).

Anyway, as I said, I seek improvement through practice. But I also need ideas on what to model, to keep things varied and interesting. This thread is where I (hopefully) get some ideas, and then show the result.

Let's start simple. I will be doing this week-by- week. So, 42 week left in the year. Each one either 1 complex model, or 2 simple ones. A total of about 60 models by year's end.

And the requests, of course. I'm gonna say every Monday is request-taking day. Go wild on the ideas (anything I can get a picture of is fine). And then I begin my voyage through the land of 3D mesh-making.

I am hoping to achieve a more varied repertoire through this, but a side-goal is for it to be an entertaining thread to watch. And since the model can be anything at all, I think it just might turn out to be.

To summarize, ideas on Monday, idea-picking on Tuesday, progress reports through the week, and finished product on Sunday. And if anyone wants to use any of the models I make, all they gotta do is ask (and any questions you might have can be posted below).

Sounds good? Yes? Then, let's start.

WEEK 1 - Monday (idea submissions start...now!)

Hm, well this seems very nice. How about a gladius, to start out simple?

I don't know if anybody has made a spetum yet, but if it's been done I haven't seen it.

Here's a fine example, fourth weapon from the left:

Do you think you could make a banded armour without the mail? I would be grateful.

Either this...
therionarms_c764d.jpg

...Or a toga

Or maybe a laurel wreath.

simplyest things for start modeling is Shields and weapons
but if you want also make textures for your models weapons isn't right place where you must start
for learning texturing it is pretty good start on simple helmets with some painted texture ornaments
after that you can try texture few swords

Hm. A lot of great requests, it's tough to choose from them ...I guess I'm gonna go ahead and break protocol for the first time here. Instead of two models, this opening week I'll be undertaking four (..dun dun dunn!).

Week 1 - Tuesday (model picking)

Accepted:

Gladius
Roman helmet thingy
Spetum
Matchlock (requested to me through pm)

Here we go.

Group 1 - Gloria Romana

1. Gladius

Ah, yes, the gladius. Such a fine, elegant weapon. Such grace! Such elegance!

This one should be pretty standard. Battle plan is to just start with a normal cylinder, then subdivide it, and scale the resulting rings of vertices into a "wavy handle", with slight bumps where the wave gets the most scale. Extrude and scale for pommel, and that part that comes before the blade, Inset on the face where the blade will go, edit aquired vertices to blade shape, extrude, and then edit blade to preferences. Easy peasy.

2. Roman helmet thingy

This one should be a wee bit harder. I'm thinking I'll start with a cylinder (again), subdivide it, and scale the rings to form the upmost part of the helmet. I then select the lines where those bumped out areas are, bevel them, and extrude to form said areas, cleaning up whatever imperfections result from it. I should then be able to select a part of the south-north line and extrude it to create the part the crest is off of. Meanwhile, I select the bottom of the back of the helmet (including the beveled out line I made and extruded), and extrude all that down the y. Editing, cleaning, detailing, etc. And all that's left is the visor part, which will be a new square, shaped into the plate, and then side-extruded/rotated for the right shape, all while messing with the top vertices for that pattern on top.

Should be interesting, to say the least.

Group 2 - Of Silverware and Matchlocks

1. Spetum

Curious fact: in portuguese, my native language, "espetar" is actually the action of sticking something sharp into something else. As you would with a fork. And "espeto" is the instrument specially designed for this, usually a small, sharpened piece of wood. This is probably due to latin, but anyway, I thought it was worth mentioning.

Still no formulated battle plan. I don't see anything out of the ordinary, though. Will see about it later.

2. Matchlock

Oh, the good old times of unleashing fiery ballistic havoc upon your foes, but then having to wait for eternity to be able to do it again...

No formulated battle plan. Never tried a gun before, so this should be a challenge...

One last thing, can anyone tell me how to put pictures into these posts? Would make them more dynamic...

Hey, that's great that you have decided to have a go at the spetum. It's a weapon that is curiously absent from the vast arsenal of available stuff, considering how many of the later, more renaissance style polearms that people have made. The spetum is more suited to the medieval setting of M&B, plus it looks nasty.

Here's another small picture to inspire:

Good luck, I look forward to seeing how you get on with it. Obrigado! (My brother lives in Portugal so I know one Portuguese word...)

1. Gladius

Model is done. Not so sure about how it looks on the side, though...

Thoughts?

I'll be working on the spetum next, and then the helmet, and then the matchlock. If there's any time left then, I'll try to texture these. I'm a pretty crappy texturer, though, so don't expect anything much.

Hey mate, judging from those models that you've done, I'd say you make them very nice.
Could you try to make some or all of these helmets for a WB mod? It's for an Aztec-like faction...
helmets are to be  styled like the head of the animal but made of bronze:
A Jaguar head.
An Anaconda head.
A Coyote head.
An Eagle head.

Thanks anyway.

1. Spetum

Hm. Spetum didn't really turn out as well as I'd like. Might change some things later, but anyway, here it is.

Can i make a request?
i know it's not monday, but otherwise i'll forget to ask you

I'm making a mod based on the 'Era of the Three Kingdoms', and i would love to have the armour that is used, in the game called 'Dynasty Warriors' ( A game series on PS2 based on this Era).

I was wondering can you make this armour?

- looks pretty simple like...... i think..... sorry for bad quality... only thing i could find

The armour iw ould like made, is not the hero's armour in the red, but the other people's armour... e.g. the purple one's .

Thanks in advance

and would i be able to have the Gladius and the Spectum thingy in my mod too? they look cool
and ofcourse, your name will be in the credits

EDIT ------ I dunno how to make the picture appear on this page lol..... hope you don;t mind looking on mediafire.....

I'm here to ask for a few banners(i dont know if you mean doing banners) and for some models

Remains of the Comoral Empire - I want those banners aged, because its an ancient empire

shield_sm.jpg

Isvaie - Desert bandits banded together to kill as many warlords they can

High Light - It's an Fanatic faction, so , focus on light vs darkness.
highlight.png

also, I would like some pirate and fanatics clothes models and if possible some aged version of native items.

hmmm.. I think banners may be for another thread.

There is acutally a pretty nice tutorial for banners floating around in the forge.

I'll take those requests into account for next week (gotta say I'm inclined to take on that robe, or at least I'm assuming it's a robe).

Unfortunately, I don't know a thing about banners.

Anyway, helmet later today. Wish me luck.

Edit: Oh, and also, I will release the models from each week to anyone who wants them, but only at the end of the week (so I can be sure there's nothing else in them I want to change). So, just send me a pm after that and I'll send you back whatever it is you want (I use megaupload, usually).

Sounds good,

i would love to use the spectrum in my mod, as it looks freaking cool

can i ask a question, would the armour i requested be too hard to make?
