Grandmaster Knight
First of all, Mount & Blade, and the people who whine about it:

A lot of people come to these forums to whine about the game, especially the graphics. I think that the graphics are more than adequate. ****, I've got 20 or so fps when my Swad knights charge. And my computer is a 2800+ AMD, 512 ram, with a Gforce 6600 Whatever (Can't remember it specificly). I can't understand these kids who simply come to the forum to ***** and moan about graphics. They probably think that Fallouts suck because they aren't visually incredible. They buy ****ed up shooters like Pariah because they are graphically good eventhough the gameplay is about as delightfull as eating satans ****. I bought the bloody thing, sold it to some idiot the next day, and went back to M&B. Does that say something about the value of good gameplay?
But I've figured it out. I introduced this game to a friend of a friend, whom I've always thought of as, well, maybe not a retard but a simpler person. He started playing. He was like 'WTF?' in the character creation, he just randomly slapped away the points. He got to Zendar, said 'this is retarded' after four seconds of actually playing. I adviced him to get a level or two, by going to the arena or the trainer. He didn't. I gave him a ton of sound advice. Yet he still wanted to attack 14 mountain bandits alone. 'remember to block', 'aim when you shoot', hold down the button when you use the bow', etc. He said that he'd kick their asses. Needless to say, he lost. He then exited the game and deleted it. He called the game retarded, and I said you just lost because you are an asshat. He didn't like that. BUT I FIGURED IT ALL OUT! Most of the people who come to bash the game here have the attention span of a burning squirrel.

Right, what's next? Oh well, I'll post more when things come to mind.

I have a feeling that this thread will eventually be pushed into the off topic.

I hate people who are like that. it reminds me of my sister. No patience whatsoever when it comes to doing anything. (i suppose that's what happens when you grow up on MSN and neopets) She has attempted a couple of times to play the game, but has never managed a full level.

Even when playing The Sims, she'll create a large number of families but never actually persist with one and make them good.

Sadly, there are so many people like that.

Our culture is probably at fault for churning out churls with 5 second attention spans.

I feel the same way. I too have played Pariah, and was thinking "wtf is this?" after about 2minutes. Its like, unreal tournament, only with worthless gameplay, crappy netcode, but slightly better graphics, yet all the kiddies are going ape over it. Same thing goes for battlefield 2 for that matter. And the thing is, the graphics are still very good on this. I mean, ever zoomed in on a single unit on R:TW? Looks like crap, like something out of original halflife, if that. So for a game where you can have...30something units on the field at once in a massive first/third person skirmish, the graphics are very good. Oh well, its their loss really.

Ah, yes, but what would advertisers and manufacturers do without those short attention spans. Games would last for years, cars would last decades, politicians would have to watch what they do. The situation has turned and our short attention spans are creating our culture.

(It looks off topic to me, too.)

The other thing is people don't like to think about anything. In games if they can't run around clicking as fast as possible and win without thinking then the game is jacked. Same with music and movies. If it isn't brainless and easy then it must be jacked.

Sounds to me your friend of a friend was turned off to the game before he even started playing.

No sense in denying M&B has rudimentary graphics. Everyone I've introduced M&B to agree they aren't on par with current standards and could use a lot of improvement. However anyone who's actually played the game for a few minutes also agree that the graphics aren't the point and the amount of gameplay more than makes up for the lack of high-poly models or flashy effects. Personally I enjoy M&B's simple, quaint charm.

Some people like overproduced, mindless Britney spears type pop music, while others prefer classical. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

I got sister just like that.

The Sims rule

Although this is off-topic, it shouldn't be moved. It should be made a global sticky. Or better yet, it should be perpetually bumped because then people might actually read it. That way, all the CS kiddies could post here, and everyone else could ignore it.
About the graphics: I think this is really good for what it does. Many new games have incredible graphics, but most of them slow down with lots of stuff on-screen. So you can't even see their great visuals. Look at M&B. The only time I ever get lag is if every charecter is on the screen. Not with every enemy, it has to be all 40 or so at once. The fact that it can display so many units with enough detail to see the tips of their lances is incredible. What other games have you seen that do that?
Finally, about short attention spans: I think that this is really an effect of the education systems in the US (and other places too, but most of them aren't as bad). Young children are bored in class, so they make up short and simple games that can be played without a teacher noticing. Teachers of course do notice, so they work on shorter and simpler games. They become conditioned to everything being short and simple. Of course, these are my observations coming from a school where reading at grade level is good, and above it is total uberness, so it might not be true everywhere.

We should have quote topic, there's been that many good ones here.

About the attention spans, i see what you mean, but a lot of people aren't like that. I think it's just the fact that they are so used to having excellent graphics in a game, when they see M&B's, they are instantly put off.

The Sims rule
I'd like to see a symbiosis of M&B and Sims 2. I'd enjoy watching Marnid's daily routine of bathing, doing the dishes, taking out the trash, killing Khergit raiders in the backyard, selling the loot and buying new furniture and wallpaper for the cash. "Your Sim is doing Couched Lance damage!" could be my favorite line ever.

Aye, i've got a friend that I set down in front of this and the first things he said were:

-This game looks like ****.
-The walking animations look like he has a knife up his ass.
-The faces suck.
-This looks like it was made by a five year old. (Oh? Lets see you model 3D graphics.)

And then he commenced to try to pull a Dynasty Warriors (Like the 14 mountain bandits.) Got slaughtered, got pissed off and quit. And then he whined about the graphics as he watched me play it. This is the same guy who bought an Xbox because the graphics were better than the PS2 and etc, so on and so forth.

And the burning squirrel quote is an instant classic ^_^
