Hand in for my dissertation is on Friday, I've had it done for about 3 weeks now and pretty happy with it. Although economics is not big-boy science like you lot.

Gave a fairly important presentation with regards to the autonomous DNA synthesizer project I've mentioned in the past that went incredibly well.

The device basically consists of a single chamber with a single strand of DNA, enzymes that can add on nucleotides to one end and a complementary strand used for verification. Super hyped, but also stressed because space is hard. The team I'm working with is super competent though so I'm feeling hopeful.

Lord Brutus 说:
Epic work, my friend.  What's the original source of the DNA?

You are.

The original strand will likely just be purchased from a commercial supplier, as will the complementary strand used for verification.

Necroing because it's worth it to keep this thread going.

As I've mentioned, I work at NASA now, taking some time between my bachelor's degree and hopefully an Astrophysics PhD. I'm primarily working with a group that does exoplanet work, on a project to compile a number of exoplanetary simulation and analysis tools. However, being with this specific group at NASA put me into contact with some other leading planetary scientists, and I may have lucked into a situation where my first publication credit will be as a co-author on a paper in Nature. They got the paper back from review, need to do some more simulations and analysis, and it's exactly the sort of work I did in undergrad and hope to continue in graduate school. So I'll spend another year or so here and potentially get some publications under my belt.

Congratulations and best wishes for the future.  The excitement of that first publication cannot be overestimated.

Sounds like you're well on your way!

You just became a Bachelor. I don't know what the admission criteria is like in the hard sciences, but I hope you don't need to have multiple papers published before you're in a program.

Strong research experience tends to compensate for un-ideal grades. Even more so in a pretty packed application year like this one.

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry 说:
you're not allowed to be successful, sabotage your future immediately.

(grats)

Don't worry, I've got multiple breakdowns planned already.

Congrats! I'll be going through the same process later this year - getting my first paper published.

Feragorn!

Which NASA facility do you work at?
I'm at Goddard.

Hopefully one that won't get its funding cut by Trump
The Trump budget got basically tossed out entirely as regards NASA. We're up a bit from last year, and all the major earth and climate science programs, education, research, and future critical missions got funded at the requested levels or higher. So, we're set for the next year.
