The most powerful man ever.

If I was to go for a Roman Emperor, I'd say Trajan or Hadrian. otherwise I would say Genghis Khan.

In terms of sheer territory he ruled over (if not actually conquering it), I would suggest Hisham Ibn Abd-el-Malik (723-743 AD). He ruled over an empire that stretched from the borders of China to Spain. His armies at one point were fighting in France and India simultaneously. Probably not the most powerful man who ever lived, but probably in the top 20.

Sounds like a good subject of research.  Why have I never heard of him?  What makes him relatively obscure?

The fact that his brother before was so unsuccesful made his rule so much better. He was an ummayid and one who encouraged the arts and such. Improved upon living conditions. but You could give the a higher rank to many other muslim leaders.
I agree though in terms of his empire size and all.

Sounds interesting indeed.

I'm definitely gonna have to say Ghengis Khan. That ambitious little Asian bastard pretty much wrecked everything he looked at, then made a sizable chunk of humankind related to him through the only method possible in the sidereal universe. Lots and lots of boning.

Maybe Constantine or Queen Victoria (hey, she looks like a man at least) for a second or third between the two.

Crassus.

It's argued that his net worth was equal to the annual budget of the Roman treasury. Who ever has or could even come close to that since.

Money like that is unmatched power, and can buy's anything. He was able even to field two full legions, equipped, trained, just from pocket change. One can only wonder how many he could have fielded using his entire treasury. I'm sure theres some formula to figure it out, comparing his alleged net wealth, vs annual salaries of legions, though i'll not be bothered doing it.

Unfortunately for him his wealth made him lack humility, and as such he sorely underestimated the Parthians and paid for it.

Well this topic can go anywhere really....

if we speak about power do we mean physical power or mental power or power of control.....

and also when you say "ever" it could possibly mean that it can be fact or fictional characters

now lets see.....
Physical power thats easy....the terminator has got my vote.....lawl
Mental Power would have to be Einstein for OBVIOUS reasons....plus hes powerful because he helped create one of the most devastating weapons ever to be put into the hands of mankind....the Nuclear bomb
Power of control....thats the real tough one. Personally my experiences teach me that control is based on fear....when someone fears you they obey you, but then again if people love you they respect and obey you which is why its hard to make a decision on this factor. i honestly cant think of one single person who is above others that are experts at controlling people.

Well if you go with that sort of perspective then Stalin all the way.

Indeed.

I am going to say Murad IV of the Ottoman empire for being one of the physically strongest rulers in history.  He also suffered from permanent roid rage and was one of the biggest jerks in history  (see my post in most annoying rulers.)    He had a huge mace that most men could not carry, that he would use to crush random people.

Alexander the Great fought "countless" of battles in the very front of his cavalry, leading them against greater numbers and normally against the odds. He must have been a hell of a fighter beside his brilliance as a field commander.

Nope. Not any more then the average Macedonian cavalry men. Plus he was saved and always looked after by one of his generals or his best friend.

EDIT : Plus he didn't fought ''Countless'' battles. Only around 10-15 i suppose. Plus he couldn't have had anyway as MOST of his empire was sheer territory.

Probably the top 5 most powerful people in history:

1. Alexander the Great

2. Julius Caesar

3. Ghenghis Khan

4. Queen Victoria I

5. Iosif Stalin

I would switch elizabeth for victoria and put napolean instead of stalin, then rearrange the list.

Well im not sure about Stalin but Victoria fits there. She did MUCH more then Elizabeth and hold onto her colonies when the other countries colonies started to break.

Stalin industrialized the Soviet Union, played a major role in the defeat of German which ended the European War: the Soviets - not Americans or British - reached Berlin first. Not only that, but roughly 90% of all German troops were fighting on the Eastern Front. Though the British did excellently in Africa and the Americans provided a good deal of help in D-Day, only 10% of the Wehrmacht was fighting in Western Europe and Africa. He also helped make the Soviet Union the dominant world power until the 1980s.

Okayyy not to go off topic but while the Germans were primarily beaten by the Russians, it was not about who reached Berlin first; we British did far more than just in Africa, D-Day was a primarily British operation (not to say the Americans didn't do anything, just not as much right there).

And why would you think Elizabeth the First was all powerful, Britain was a pipsqueak then!
