The 150th Melbourne Cup is only days away. Here's a short summary of each runner:
Shocking: Form this season has been excellent. Widest barrier and top weight make it difficult but record at Flemington hard to ignore.
Campanologist: Has good European form against quality stayers. Slight distance query.
So You Think: The best horse in the country. Backed up Cox Plate win with dominant Mackinnon Stakes victory. Untried at distance but certainly the one they all have to beat.
Zipping: The grand old campaigner is racing in great heart. Boxed on very well in the Cox Plate, chance at odds.
Illustrious Blue: Very consistent European stayer with excellent record at two miles. Best from on dry tacks though.
Mr Medici: Hong Kong stayer who plugged away in the Caulfield Cup. Drawn well and handles all conditions.
Shoot Out: Racing like a genuine stayer. Has last years winning jockey aboard. Probably a better place chance.
Americain: Really impressed with Geelong win. Has winning form up to 3100 metres, he's the leading overseas contender.
Tokai Trick: Japanese veteran who struggled in the Caulfield Cup. Likely to appreciate Flemington better but has struck a good quality field this year.
Buccellati: Has not recaptured his best form from Europe.
Descarado: Slogging Caulfield Cup win followed up with Mackinnon Stakes second. On pacer who loves the wet and stays all day.
Harris Tweed: Ran into 5th position last year but in better form this time. Followed Flemington win with dogged runner up performance in Caulfield Cup. Handles the wet, has a chance.
Manighar: Solid effort in the Caulfield Cup. Seems to enjoy wet ground, genuine hope.
Master O'Reilly: Tries hard but will get back and hasn't won for three years.
Monaco Consul: Seemed to be just treading water until determined effort in Caulfield Cup after covering ground. Will be stronger than most at the finish.
Profound Beauty: Fifth in the 2008 Cup. Recent form has been solid. Wide barrier a minus but not out of it.
Zavite: Twice winner at two miles and decent effort at Caulfield. Rough place chance.
Bauer: He was tremendous back in 2008 winning at Geelong and missing the big prize by a nose. Only had two runs since that have been less than convincing. Take on trust.
Holberg: Well credentialed Godolphin stayer with Frankie Dettori aboard. Unknown on wet ground though.
Precedence: Hasn't put a foot wrong this campaign and has the Cummings polish. Tends to over race but can feature with the right run.
Red Ruler: Has not captured his best New Zealand form this season. He is likely to struggle.
Linton: Emerging stayer in good form. Wide barrier makes it tough but no doubting his consistency.
Once Were Wild: Brave effort in the Lexus on Saturday. One of the better longshots.
Maluckyday: Scrambled into the field with a come from behind victory in the Lexus Stakes. Is likely to get back in the field but is a strong stayer with a light weight. Good chance.
Summary: So You Think to beat Descarado, Americain and Harris Tweed.
