It's easy to use them to sweep things under the rug. If anyone tries to expose any bad behavior he can easily be branded as a crazy conspiracy theorists and ignored because there are so many real crazy conspiracy theorists who really are believing in nonsense.
So you have someone like rgodfrey warning everyone that the whole western half of the U.S. will become a radioactive Fallout game wasteland because of Japan's nuclear meltdowns and everyone laughs and assures themselves that nuclear radiation is perfectly harmless and you can take a bath in it everyday without ill effects. It may even be good for you.
And another problem is solved. It's always one extreme or the other, you have to believe in the wackyist and wildest conspiracies or you have to believe that everyone is always trying to do what is best for everyone because people are very nice, thoughtful and caring about others because that is human nature. There can be no middle ground here, apparently.
Counterpoint: Radiation from nuclear power plants summons evil spirits and will kill everything within a four thousand square mile radius and then it spreads, causing more death and destruction. If you think the scent of burnt tobacco leaves is deadly wait until you get a load of the evil power of radiation.
I'm from South Louisiana, so I can relate to this, ok, not on this scale of destruction, Jesus I feel for these folks.
