Overview of the Guild system
This is an idea that has been bouncing around in my head for some time. What I propose is a semi-serious group of player guilds who play out a mini drama amongst each other on the forum and resolve conflicts with each other on the field of battle. Members of these guilds would still be able to be members of clans outside of the group. However, the method of combat within this guild system would differ from “normal” multiplayer.
Guild combat would be our equivalent of a medieval reenactment society. Cavalry would not act as the lone wolfs that are often seen in current multiplayer combat. Horsemen would act as an effective unit, staying together to face other groups of mounted knights and mass charging groups of exposed archers and vulnerable infantry. Different guilds from the same faction can work together to take on guilds from other factions, or may also fight each other. Achieving this level of discipline and effectiveness will not be easy, and will require its own thread for discussion about methods and skills development. Infantry and archers would also work in strict unison, preferably with each group being led by a skilled sergeant. Finally, I envision each side to be under the command of a single player.
Each encounter would also be attended by a chronicler whose job it will be to write a detailed and enthralling piece of prose. These pieces should be written in character with all the biases the in character author included. More than one account of the battle can be written, it all depends on how many are willing and want to undertake the chronicle.
There will be much to discuss if there are many others who are interested. So now I will move on and introduce my guild for this little society. If you are interested in joining my group, feel free to reply in this thread or to me via PM. If you wish to set up a guild please write an appropriate back-story such as I have written for my guild.
Holy Swadian Order of St. Arnulf
It is written,
“Long ago the lands of Caldaria were ruled by an unbroken line of enlightened Swadian kings. For millennia, all Caldarians lived in a glorious age of peace and prosperity under their magnanimous governance. However, the prolonged peace brought an unforeseen danger. The great rulers became complacent of their kingly duties and sheepish in their dealings with foreigners. Rumblings, that the blade of the Swadian heart had dulled and rusted, grew among the heathens of poorer lands. Yet the uncouth barbarians could not understand that what has rusted away is not destroyed, merely waiting to be forged anew.
In their dragon boats they came, as if the sea itself spawned forth giant vermin-infested sea creatures in uncountable numbers. The sounds of heathen shouts and drums chilled the hearts of all Caldaria. Their appetite for cruelty was immense and matched only by their thirst for plunder. For many a fortnight the coastline was fouled and raped by the beast men. All the while, their crimes went unpunished and the cries of the people went unheard.
The people of the empire cried out for their king to save them, yet he was a weak man. His line had been spoiled from countless years of pampering, for he knew not the way of the lance nor of the sword. He was a man of the merchants and as a merchant he acted. As a king it was his duty to charge the cannibals with muscle and steel and push the fish smelling filth back into the sea. Instead, the gelded king offered silver and gold in an attempt to quench the sea beasts thirst for blood. Yet this offering of Caldaria’s bosom only made the beasts ravenous and frenzied. It looked as if all Caldaria would be consumed in an orgy of blood and violence. However, there was one who would not let it be so.
Long before the first coming of the sea scourge, a great prince foresaw what the great peace would one day bring upon Caldaria and its benevolent Swadian keepers. His father and brothers thought him a fool and had he and his followers banished to the furthest corners of the empire. Here his progeny kept true to the old ways of Swadia. For in their veins ran the strongest and purest of regal scarlet. It was here that the forge of the Swadian heart was kept hot; knowing one day it would be needed again. From this place was wrought Saint Arnulf.
What started as a faint spark soon grew into a righteous firestorm that would cleanse the lands of Caldaria from the sea scourge and temper the hearts of all Swadians. To Saint Arnulf flocked the common and noble alike. In him they became Swadian once more. Through him they rekindled what had been forsaken. For him they would die gloriously.
Saint Arnulf and his faithful army moved first to the heart of the Empire. The merchants and attendants of the weakling king pleaded to him to send the saint away. However the king knew that Saint Arnulf was the salvation of all Caldaria. The king did not resist and sent away the cowardly sycophants. The king bowed down to the holy saint and was blessed with mercy. For the weakling was not beheaded, as was the way of the false Swadians, but was allowed to live in tranquility at the holiest monstary.
To the foul beasts from the sea, the glorious Saint showed did not repeat his mercy. His armies swept the coast of their foul stench, and as they came they left. Though what was originally thousands was now culled to a number countable to by even the most uneducated of Vaegirs. All of Calradia rejoiced and hailed their new savior. The Swadian kings of old had returned to their rightful throne! The steel of the Swadian heart was forged anew and would shine bright until the end of time!”
The great Saint Lothair once said “All that has become before will become again.” Alas, though the strength of Saint Arnulf was indeed righteous and true, it too faded in his descendants. The line of Arnulf has suffered that which befell the Swadian kings of old. The Saints progeny have grown weak, their blood dirtied and their thoughts polluted by merchants and sycophants. From the seed of weakness the tree of despair has grown. Things that came to pass have indeed come again. Our Caldarian inferiors have rebelled against us. Once again the smell of rot has attracted vermin. Yet this time they come in swarms from seas of water and grass. Saint Arnulf, I beg you, hear the cries of those who have preserved your ways! Let not the sound of your glory be muffled under the hoof beats of mangy horses and cries of foul men! I give myself whole and truly to you. I sacrifice everything and ask only for the salvation of Swadian glory. Use my body to do your will, for my soul is true in your eyes. Through your grace and in your name I create a holy order that will once again cleanse Caldaria and bear witness to the rebirth of the glorious Empire of Swadia!
