The Heroes of Mount & Blade
In an age of darkness and despair, mighty champions will rise to destroy the encroaching evil. But no prophecy dictates the outcome. That task is reserved for you...
This mod aims to create a game mode which presents an epic battle between players, one of whom will take the role of a dark lord while the rest become heroes who try to stop the evil one.
The dark lord will build an army, recruiting legions of evil henchmen, from looters to dark knights, and supernatural monstrosities such as horrors from beyond the grave, magical beasts born of forbidden rites and demons from the depths of hell itself, to bring about an age of unending suffering and sorrow.
The heroes will try to destroy the dark lord before he brings his evil scheme into fruition, growing from lowly adventurers to mighty champions as the game progresses. They will slay the dark forces, gain levels and purchase better equipment and bodyguards, aiming to ultimately storm the dark lord's fortress to put an end to him once and for all.
That's the basic gist of the deal. More detailed information here:
The dark lord starts out in his throne room inside his cursed fortress, with some money to purchase troops to get the ball rolling, while the heroes start by picking their class and spawning in a town on the other side of the map, where they can spend their starting gold on either some better equipment, bodyguard bots or a bit of both.
The dark lord has access to a strategic map from his throne room, through which he can command his soldiers in an RTS fashion. His main goal is to take and hold the town the heroes spawn in, but along the way he will want to capture various strategic points on the map.
The heroes will try to defend their town and recapture any strategic points that fall into the dark lord's grasp. The town will also periodically spawn bots (mostly weak peasants and watchmen, but especially later on they will improve in quality) to attack the dark lord. While these bots don't present any direct physical threat to the dark lord, each one that reaches his fortress will loot some cash from the dark lord's coffers, and if he ignores the rabble he could quickly end up flat-out broke.
Heroes will loose all their equipment, experience and money when they die, and the value of all their stuff will be added to the dark lord's treasury. However, the player of the dead hero can elect to spawn as a new type of hero and will be higher level and have more gold depending on how long the game has been going. So, even a player who dies (or joins) later in the game has a chance to climb back into the fight.
The strategic points on the map fall into three categories; Resource, Outpost and Small Town.
Resource points are things like farms and mines, and will generate a steady stream of income to whomever controls it. They can also be raided for a single big boost of cash, but then they won't produce any income for a good while.
Outposts offer resupply points for the heroes where they can refill ammo, shields, horses and health (at a cost, of course), as well as spawn points for the dark lord's and town's bots. They can be razed, after which they become completely useless, but they can be rebuilt for a fee.
Small towns combine the Resource and Outpost roles, but as an added bonus they also enable heroes to purchase new equipment and bodyguards, just like in the main town. There will generally only be one or two of these on a map, and can be razed and rebuilt like outposts, but the costs are far greater.
The dark lord has access to troop trees consisting of humans and supernatural creatures. He can recruit humans from the get-go (with the more powerful troops being unlocked as time goes by), but will have to purchase access to each type of supernatural tree separately, and any subsequent tiers of said trees.
There are three separate trees of supernatural creatures; Undead, Beast and Demon.
The Undead tree offers generally weaker and more specialized units than the others, but they are very cost effective.
The Beast tree offers fast and hard-hitting creatures, but they generally lack armour and defensive capabilities.
The Demon tree offers the most powerful troops, but they are going to charge quite a bit for the privilege.
While pursuing one path doesn't shut out the other two, unlocking several tiers of several trees will be quite costly.
The dark lord can also leave his fortress and directly participate in the combat, but this can be quite risky even though he is the single most powerful combatant in the game. He will have to retreat to his throne room to resupply and heal, however, and won't be able to sally forth at the start of the game until some time has passed.
