The Hall of Heraldry

Sweet, because these custom banners are incredible, maybe you could put then all into an easy downloadable mod?

Ah, this sounded like fun.... So i did it!  And, went through the extra effort to make it properly heraldic

For those of you interested in making up your own banner/coat of arms, here is a
great site that can be a helpful guide in what the colors (tinctures), charges (symbols),
etc all mean and some of the rules that you should be aware of when developing your
coat of arms.

I originally had a red griffon on a field of green before I finally grasped the concept
that in the first rule of tinctures you cannot have metal on metal or a color on a color.
(I only read that several times before it sunk into my thick skull!)

The only problem with making a mod for these is making sure the banners are held up the right way and not stretched.
I anyone wants to have a go though, I'll send them my photoshop file with them all in.

Yeah? Well it sure takes a lot more skill then axeing people.
Axing, actually, and a skilled coward is still a coward.
Say that to a Mongol's, Hun's, Scythian's, etc. face and he'll eat your "nordic" (stress on the quotation marks ) arse alive.

Actually, since people are mostly
inept, and there may be a large
number, it should be easy to
write a little script to insert them.

Sort of a pick and choose option.

That really sounds like the best option...especially since having these banners in dds format makes them  worth about... 150kb each which adds up to several megabytes after only a couple dozen.  Besides, that's a lot of other peoples' to look through to get to your own, as well.

The problem with automating this is that the UV mapping of the textures is a little wonky, or at least seemed that way to me.  I had to try over and over again to get my banner to display decently in game (I "overwrote" the black/white eagle banner used for Khan).  The pixel aspect ratio is definitely not 1:1 on that one.  And I get the feeling it might vary from position to position inside the DDS.  For example, the widths of the banners vary even within the first DDS.  But I'm no expert in the matter so hopefully I'm off base.

It does vary;  Some display as banners, some as pennants, some are alligned differently as vertical or horizontal, some get clipped into flag-shapes.

You have to check a banner in game, see how it displays on your little figure; remember which one works for you, and overwrite that one.  That's how I got mine to work properly in game.

If the general consensus is to compile them all in to a community mod... I'll make some more to put in to the pack.

Goddamn Swadian bastard! There is no emperor. There's just a king.
Nord scum, the only reason you took Sargoth is because the Brigade was on vacation in Cancun.
And it doesnt matter how you call him, you will soon bow down to him

BTW: He really should be Emperor, too many Kings and Kingdoms in native.

I desagree. Swadia is not an empire.

wow, this all sounds so great.

PS: thanks to RayvenQ for providing the blank white banner I used

Speaking of which, I'd appreciate having some blanks to tamper with, instead of having to edit out what is on the current banners. Where could I get that blank?

I'm sure RayvenQ won't mind me posting the file depository link here as long as he gets credited for his help.

There you go: Blank White Banner

But since we're already at it - additional templates (blank banners in other colors) would be appreciated by me as well. I'm sure that would make creating new banners a lot easier for all players. I have to admit, I suck at understanding photoshop, as I'm pretty sure that somewhere it has an option that would allow me to do it by myself.
I'm too specialized on MS paint, apparently. I just love to edit pixel by pixel. And too lazy to earn how to do it easier.

By the way - does anyone know how I'd be able to implement a combat-usable banner into the game like D'Sparil did (see screenshots on page 2)? I tried PMing him but the forum keeps telling me there is no such user - probably because of the apostroph. :???:

That link doesn't work, it offers no way of getting the .rar.

Why not just upload it to www.imageshack.us ?

[EDIT]

I looked around a bit in the PhotoJerk forums, and I've found that they're having some major issues with data loss, customer service, and simply getting things done. For the love of god, if you need some image hosting, imageshack is free to use, you can create a free account, upload as many images you want, easily manage them, etc. Just go there.

Sorry about that broken PhotoJerk thing. I am a big fan of Imageshack as well (as you can see from my pictures on the other pages of this thread), but that link was from RayvenQ's upload (RAR-archived DDS file) and I just figured it might still work. I even tried it out before posting, but the page itself loaded without any problems, so I did not try the actual file. Again, sorry to have you kept waiting.

Anyways, this should work now: http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/1535/bannerblankbb7.png

Hmm... "Inverted in the lower" is the kind of thing you'd expect from a modern sense of symmetry, not a medieval one.  To a medieval eye, that's not one charge surrounded by two of another charge, that's just three seperate charges, which is somewhat cluttery.

Not that there's any reason for you to strive for "period correctness", and that level of clutter is perfectly in later periods as arms started to get marshalled into absurdity, I just want to make sure your decision is deliberate, and not born of ignorance.

Erm, yeah... I know, actually :p  Its my anal retentive need for proper symmetry   I want it to be attractive, and its still semi-proper.  I was going to go with a simple or, a lion rampant gules; but then I thought it looked a bit too.... Scottish.

So I added a bit too it
