What constitutes an invention?

The large hadron collider is a particle accelerator. Those have been around in one form or another for roughly 80 years now. The LHC is just another, scaled up iteration. Is it still considered an invention in this case?

I hope apple makes one so they can sue anyone else making one since they have invented everything this past 1000 years, or so they think.

Alrighty, from the fact that there is some confusion regarding the theme of the thread, I shall now change it to: "The greatest invention ever"!

Kevlar: I also don't get it: Why is it that Apple seemingly has the patent of everything techie? It sues Samsung, it doesn't spare Microsoft- It's a bit too attention-whory.

I want to say the first pure state quantum computer from 2004.
But that's just an arbitrary step in the technology that's been underway for a long time.

Still, quantum computing could revolutionize technology as a whole, and really took off after year 2000.

It says the greatest invention ever in the title, but I wasn't aware ever was a synonym for century.

to think.

The greatest part about this invention is that the human didn't have to think about it initially.  Something happened .. and suddenly, it was there in an instant.

That's not an invention, dickwad. That's a biological function

When it happened the first time, it was an invention.

The second best invention would be to sex.
