Hmmm... well it seems the theme of the thread is pretty much self-explanatory.  Everybody posts what they think to be the greatest invention ever and the reason behind it. You can also rebut each other.

Okay, I'll begin. I think Wikipedia is the greatest invention ever. It allows free knowledge of literally every topic of the world within just a few clicks of the mouse.

Well, make up your mind. Is it going to be the greatest invention of the century or the greatest invention "ever"?

Dusk Voyager means that 'greatness' is a pretty damn vague term.

Besides, when was Wikipedia invented? '98 or something like that? EDIT: 2001. Close.

Why not the greatest invention of the last century?

The greatest invention of this millennium (why keep it at century) is the Large Hadron Collider at CERN that went live in 2008. Its discovery of the Higgs boson would revolutionize weight loss (or mass loss) therapies to the benefit of the obese mankind.
It will go on to discover more particles in the 20s and 30s, some of them edible or giving a natural high, until an ill-fated experiment launches most of Switzerland into orbit.

Because internet is to easy.

A lot of things needed to be invented before the internet could become possible. The greatest invention of the twentieth century is sliced bread, or so I've been told.

Quite possibly the worst invention in human history, I'd say. As anyone who has ever actually bought something from them could tell you.

You are clearly part of the Christian conspiracy to suppress the truth that we are all Swedish, just like ancalimon said.

Godspeed, Cern. Godspeed.

What constitutes an invention?

The large hadron collider is a particle accelerator. Those have been around in one form or another for roughly 80 years now. The LHC is just another, scaled up iteration. Is it still considered an invention in this case?
