The follow me command

The follow me command seem to mean surround me. Or is it just me doing something wrong?
When i clear hideouts i have them follow me as a backup. Ending up shooting my own men becuase they stand in front of me insteed of following me.
During battles they surround me so i can´t move.

Yes. They generally stay behind you and spread from your left to your right, making you the center. By default they're facing the enemy. What often happens is that this line changes its direction because the enemy is moving, and some men end up being in front of you. Your front is not necessarily their front.
