The Fast Approaching Sidewalk: A Story of a Baby's Head

I like how 'Parti' is pronounced identically to the verb 'Partir', or leave. The silly blokes can't even follow their own advice!

Then again, it could just be all the hard-working immigrants we bring in)
Hard-working immigrants? You're kidding, right? I've never seen one of those.

As for temporary foreign workers, well, I would have to admit I'm a little more biased on that. Having your job taken away by someone willing to work for $1.31 per day less tends to do that to you.

Euh, condradiction?

Anyway, you sound like me 2 years ago or my brother. I live in a city and go to a school filled with Canadian Chinese. They are harder working and more appreciative than 95% of the ****heads I meet whenever I go back to Canada. You're making a generalized statement.

First off, I'm sure you're aware that Canada is a country of immigrants, just some came at different times. I agree that after a certain point you lose the 'immigrant' mark, but who ever said our opinions on when that happens is the same? What I do know is that the guys working construction that I met this summer were a mixture of immigrants and Canadians and they all worked just as hard and well as eachother.

There was a Turkish fellow who painted and a newly-immigranted English carpenter among them. Now compare them, hard-working people who earned their way into the system by speaking English, proving themselves worthy and integrating into our shared culture, to the welfare dregs that take cash from the government to get drunk on Friday nights and pick fights with, well, anyone not like them.

It's not about immigrants. Its silly and ignorant to point out an entire nationality of immigrants and label them as not hard working. There are useless people in every class and of every ethnicity/culture.
No contradiction as far as I can see - there's a big difference between an immigrant and a temporary foreign worker. One comes here to stay, while the other does not and, during these times, is often filling a position somebody born or who immigrated here could fill. I say send them packing, until the need for them rises again, then go ahead and let them return. I was the person who trained the guy that took my job, which, as far as I could tell, was being done just fine by me.

95%? My, that's a mighty high number. I see lots of hard-working folks around here - unless, of course, if you mean Parliament Hill. The number there's more like 98%, though. I, too, have had Canadian Chinese classmates, but it's usually more of a 50/50 split on who works hard and appreciates what they have and have accomplished and who doesn't, just like everybody else.

I'm descended from an immigrant family who came here in the late 1800s, so knowing this place is a country built on their backs is a given.

Seeing hard-working immigrants on a construction site, well, that would be a rarity for me. I take it this wasn't an oil sands work site? Most of the immigrants and temporary foreign workers on those sites can speak little English, have either never seen or don't know how to use safety equipment, and have great difficulties using their tools. My crew spent half a day explaining to a Vietnamese lady how to properly attach her safety harness, since she couldn't understand a word we said. Sure, she was nice and all, but even after she had the harness on right, she refused to work, telling the translator we had to borrow from another crew she had to rest...for an hour and a half! If this was an isolated incident, fine, but this happens all the time. Where's the sense in hiring somebody who can't perform their duties?

Would that be all people on welfare, or just some of them? If it's all of them, well, seems we're both a couple of silly and ignorant twits.

And since when did I label a certain nationality as being lazy? Seems to me I didn't point out anybody from a certain country, region, or language locality in my original post. You might want to re-read that original post, my friend. Awful funny thing, how everybody assumes that when you're anti-immigrant, you're anti-Asian. We've got enough Americans working north of Fort Mac to choke a horse, and they speak perfect English.
