Evening.

I've been playing this game non-stop since I bought it last week, and I love it! I have one slight problem though... Whenever I start working for a faction, even if it is just as a mercenary, said faction starts taking over the entire map... If I join as a vassal, it goes incredibly fast... I decided to try and join Swadia instead, as it seemed to get killed off pretty fast usually, but now Swadia sits on 60% of the map and just keeps expanding... Now if this were my goal, that would be great... I would like however to once start my own faction and win the map using that instead... I have a feeling it will be hard when I only have one opponent and said opponent has the entire map?

Can I do anything to change this? I tried playing with diplomacy, but it of course didn't change this at all:/

Have you been helping you're faction take over the map and its too easy?  If that's the reason then you may want to consider turning up the "campaign difficulty" in the options menu.  You could just be incredibly lucky though, in my experience on my game the Khergits have been the ones expanding the most.

It is not necessary to ever join a faction. Just send every companion, even those you don't want to keep, out to do rtr missions (talk to them, ask them a question and say that you want to become ruler). 16 companions times 3 rtr per mission (they can only go once) and you've got yourself a bunch of right to rule.

Next, make friends by releasing lords that surrender. After a bit you will notice some have awesome realtions to you and some are just jerks. Capture the jerks and let them spend the rest fo their life in your prison - or ransom, whichever. You can get enemy lords into the 90s for relation by kicking their butt and letting them go several times.

Next, storm a castle that just changed hands. Any armies in it should be weakened end the garrison will be small. Be prepared to fight HARD to keep that castle.

Now try to make treaties as fast as you possibly can.

Fight, fight, fight...

Profit.

I never even saw the campaign difficulty option:S I will go change that:smile: Because no, I just stayed back and watched as the swadians took over most everything... Now I will try not to join anyone though... Can you still marry?

Yes of course, even gets you rtr and some possibly nice in-laws. Pick carefully though.

Sorry for jumping in on your thread Duze with my own question....

How do you tell what family's are "powerful"?  In general are there certain family's that are better then others?

In most cases, renown = power

Thanks:smile: I hope my next game will be better then:smile:

Ok sorry, didn't read the thread this time, don't have the patience right now.  But this concerns something I've thought heavily about.

In my experience, you want to join a faction before you start your own kingdom, for the Right to Rule (RtR) when the faction makes peace with other factions, and more importantly for the relations you build when you fight in battles alongside the other lords of the same faction.  And incidentally also the relations you build with the warring faction when you let them go free instead of imprisoning them.

Now, when you start your own kingdom, you don't want any factions to be overly powerful.  Most preferably all the factions should be equally weak.  Divide and conquer, as the Romans did...

But, as the OP complains about, it's very easy to make the faction you are warring for the most powerful faction by far.  So when you are working for a faction, you must be careful.  This adds another dimension to the game.  Don't make the faction you're working for too powerful!

How to do that and still work well in your own favor could be a thread in its own right.  And should.

On my current game, I joined Swadia. They were with only 1-2 towns left. Captured every of their original towns and most of the castles and even expanded capturing towns and castles from another factions like Halmar and Veluca. I requested them for me to defend them myself.

But this was just a strategy... As soon as I saw Swadia powerful, I deserted them to start my own Kingdom taking out Nord lands. Now they are powerful and with many enemies to fight, which leads to the 2 basic following advantages:

- My main troops are Swadian Knights, so that would be very bad if they declare war on me because of the troop's morale penalty, etc. That way they are too busy fighting other Kingdoms to declare war on me
- The other factions will also be too busy destroying Swadia. No one will care too much to declare war on me. And if they do, they will be a little weak for the many battles with Swadia.

Of course it won't last forever sooner or later Swadia will fall and for real this time, but will give me enough time to build a solid Kingdom filled with lords.
