Historical background:

30 years war ,the bloodiest and harmfull conflickt of the XVII century Europe.War between the Protestants and Catolics took lifes of thausands of people. One of the stronger players of this political game - Kingdom of Sweden - felt a desire for power and wealth. This led to the clash with second great force - Holy Roman Empire.

Genesis:
On November 16, 1632, the Catholic League army under the command of Albrecht von Wallenstein headed to the regions of Saxony. They were followed by the army of Gustav II Adolf, who wanted to prevent the merger of the imperial forces. Near Naumburg (Saale) Gustaw set his troops in anticipation of an opponent. After receiving information that Wallenstein had sent his troops, led by Gottfried Heinrich von Pappenheim, towards Halle and Lützen, on November 15 Gustav made the immediate decision to chase the enemy to north. There was a two-hour battle with the imperial forces commanded by General Rudolf Colloredo, who defended the ford on the Rippach River near Weisenfell. This fight alarmed Wallenstein, who realized the situation, on the night of November 16 fire of artillery called scattered troops and ordered Pappenheim to return. Then, he set up his troops along the steaming route and Flossgraben Stream. He also strengthened the castle on the right wing and the city along with the nearby hill, placing musketeers and most of the cannons there. The entire front of the imperial forces, which were prepared until the morning, was facing south. The center was made up of four quadrangles, while the cavalry was located on the hills. On the morning of November 16, the Swedes began marching from Rippach towards the imperial army. The Swedish army consisted of about 19000 people, the imperial army numbered 15000. soldiers (+ 3000 Pappenheim). Around 11:00 a.m., the surrounding fog rose, enabling Gustaw Adolf to attack Wallenstein's positions.

Phase I
Gustav intended to strike the main blow with the forces of the right wing, over which he personally took command. The king's goal was to push the opponent out of Leipzig. The attack on the right-wing Swedish drive easily broke through Wallenstein's weak left wing, cutting the connection of imperial forces with Leipzig. In the center and on the right imperial wing the most severe fights flared, during which imperial troops gradually gave way to Swedes. During the fight Pappenheim's cavalry came from Leipzig, which immediately striked the victorious right wing of the Swedes. The Swedes were pushed onto the Leipzig road, but Pappenheim was fatally wounded. Pappenheim's death caused confusion among the imperial forces, which the Swedes took advantage of and flanked the imperial center again, but the dense fog stopped their attack again.

Phase II
On the left wing of the Swedish army, Bernard Weimar's army bled out in ineffective attacks on Lützen until they eventually began to retreat due to Wallenstein's counter-attack. In this situation, Gustaw Adolf hastened to Bernard Weimar with help leading the infantry regiment.Another imperial army received from Octavio Piccolomini, who was the head of two regiments joined the fight. Emerging from the fog new regiments completely surprised Gustaw, who hit by a bullet in the chest drove back.Around 2pm he fell off his horse. At first, the king's death was not noticed, the fight went on. The Swedes slowly gave way to the imperial ones, it was supposed to be a failure.

Phase III
At this point, Prince Bernard Weimar shouted: "Swedes! They killed your king! Avenge him! " and started to charge. The army followed him and fought fiercely until dusk, capturing around 4 p.m. Lützen with imperial batteries. In the evening, Bernard finally managed to force the imperial army to retreat, whose retreat turned into a chaotic escape. Only the infantry defended themselves in the battlefield were fighting, but this, at the order of Wallenstein, who was injured in the battle, interrupted the fight. Wallenstein ordered the infantry of the killed Pappenheim to cover his retreat towards Leipzig. As they left, the imperial army left all the cannons and several thousand dead on the battlefield. After finding the body of the king, the Swedes camped, and then turned back to Weißenfels on November 17. The clash, although successful with the Swedes, was a Pyrrhic victory for them because of the king's death and huge losses.
