the Cry of the Icemark

A fantasy book... A really fantasy book. I normally hate books with vampires, werewolves, and other things, but this book and it's amazing writing style really makes it the most under-appreciated book out there!
    The small Kingdom of Icemark is under attack by the amazing Polypotain(?) empire, that has controlled most of the known world. This has been beaten seldom, and never when the general Scorpio Bellorum went into battle itself. Thirrin Strong-in-the-arm Lindenshield knows her small nation will never beat the Imperial War Machine, and sets out for allies. Will she make it in time in time to save her country?

Is it one of those fantasy books that makes references to the fantasy world but provides no resource to look it up?

I remember reading that book and Blade of Fire a while back. They were fairly decent, albeit very predictable and cheesy (like most fantasy stories targeted at that age level).
