I was thinking,
"What if there was conscription!"
So here it is!
When entering a village, you can talk to the village elder where you can muster troops to defend from would be raiders. Mustering men will lower the village's prosperity but after the war, you can return the men back to their villages." Wait!" You may ask, "If conscription lowers the village's prosperity, why should I bother to!
Well you see, you can only get 0-8 recruits if you were to recruit at a village if you have 0-3 relation with it, but if you were to conscript the local populace, you would 100% get troops.
So there would be three types of conscripts
First would be the levy
He would be armed with a shortened spear and a shield depending on which region he comes from, so a board shield for a Rodhok or a heather shield for a Swadian. For armour he would be lightly armoured, with at most a footmen's helmer. The levy is completely free, using armour and arms the village already has.
Next would be the Militia
Now he would be better armed with a spear and shield or even a sword. He would also wear at least a studded leather coat or a gamberson and also a helmet with neck guard or even a bascinet. The militia would cost about 300 denars for equipment.
Last, we have the Town Guard
This guard comes from the town's lord who provides volunteers with equipment, but the populace can also be ordered into arms. Equiped with at first a spear and a good shield, these men can hold their own in a battle or a siege. They would wear a brigantine and a mail coif or a bascinet. Then there would be 4 upgrade routes. A Guardsman would cost 600 denars
1. Town Veteran Guard, armed with a war spear, a shield and also a short sword, these men will cut down men and horses alike
2. Town Guard (Sword) These men would be armed similarly to the Town Veteran Guard, but with a longer sword and javelins. These men would bring the besiegers packing home.
3. Town Crossbowmen, these men would be the same but with a crossbow
4. Town Mounted Guard. These men are the best the town has to offer, carrying a light lance, they also carry a sword and wear a haubergeon and a guard helmet and of course a horse.
