The best multiplayer game never made.

NOTE: This is going to be controversial, but I mean no disrespect. I love M&B but I think that the direction it's going in is misguided. All the following is respectfully IMO:

Yes it's another dreaded "multiplayer" thread. It's the subject that will not die.

What we currently have is a great combat system wrapped up in a poor campaign world.

The campaign side of the game needs at least 12 months work to become even slightly convincing...

So, I put this to you.

M&B can be...

a) A mediocre strategy, trade game with great combat.

or

b) The best multiplayer game ever made
--

I personally think the latter is what should be focussed on.

Phase 1. The next version of M&B should have custom battles so those of us that are only here for the 3D battles can get their fill.

Phase 2. The multiplayer release.

Some of the multiplayer game types I’d like are:

Duel (1 on 1, best out of 3, 5, 7 etc.) *
Last man standing (every man for himself)
Team skirmish (Spawn on random side then fight as teams)
Team match (fight as clan Vs clan)

* Duel should be a demo level limitation. i.e. buy the full game for more multiplayer options.

In multiplayer you could earn a certain amount of gold in battles as well as getting experience points. After a battle you can then buy armour and weapons for the next round and use the experience gained to hone your skills.

Phase 3. Keep refining the multiplayer version but bring in a refined, real world campaign game.
Why multiplayer?
Because we deserve the best enemies - no AI can recreate a cunning human player
Because fighting as a team is the best fun of all

M&B should be THE best multiplayer combat simulator. Please, please, please move away from the campaign game and focus on this (and make a fortune too).

Does anyone share my view?

I believe its impossible with the game engine they have.

I agree with more options tournaments etc. Capture the flag, flag rally (control majority of flags before time runs out) and things like that should be an option. Could be used in standard battles. Eg you are a caravan guard and are attacked by bandits. Instead of a standard battle you must defend a spot where a caravan model could be placed (maybe on higher ground). If you run away from it then you lose the battle.

Multiplayer, if it could be done by Armagan & Co. in a reasonable time, might be awesome. I suspect though that it would not be so simple a task. You write that the game as it now is needs "at least 12 months work," do you think they could create "the best multiplayer game of all time" more quickly?

A custom battle mode has been suggested by myself & others so that we could simply get to the main event - fighting a battle against a picked group of enemies on a particular battlefield. I think that's a very reasonably doable possibility. I hope it happens.

A dedicated M&B multiplayer game would likely be a very good game but I think it would mean abandoning for a very long time the rest of the game's content. It might be the best multiplayer game ever but I think even then it would need lots of additional tweaks: additional combat moves, battle animations, custom armor & weapons.

It could be a big decision.

Adding in multiplayer now would require a large amount of time and code changes which could be better spent on the core game. A big no from me on the multiplayer idea...

Is that it likely wouldn't be cost effective for them to do so without changing M&B into a subscription MMORPG and frankly I'm sick of them and all the stuff that comes with them. I think Checkmaty is right, the time would be much better spent on the core game.

P.S Custom armour would be sweet as though.

Depending on how it was programmed, probably not. I do not know how the programming in the game is handled, but if it was done in a purely OOP way, it would be semi-simple to get multiplayer in there, you just replace the AI with instructions sent from client machines(which is why it's semi-simple, it would take some time to get that coded, but it's not like it would detract too much from the core game). However, it seems most people want MMO, which is far too server intensive for a game such as this, however for games with a small number of friends(think back to Diablo2), every computer playing could be handled as a server and client(this makes those with dial-up out of luck pretty much) and it could be a simple as I previously described.

I don't give two ****s whether multiplayer is added or not. Most SP only games have whining maggots on the forums demanding MP, as though the devs are supposed to take orders from them. If it gets added, nobody plays it longer than a week. Soldiers, Deus Ex, GTA3&VC, etc.

A skirmish mode would be a nice addition though. If it's possible.

I have very little to add to this.

You (OP) assume that M&B is destined to fall into one of these generic gametypes. It always has and always will be a sort of a Sid Meier-style "organism", never a Morrowind or a BF1942. A little plot might be thrown in, but the dynamic gameworld is the true content and just needs more complexity. You won't get even one **** from me regarding MP.

Developers and publishers spend years and millions of dollars on large development teams full of talented people to pursue the coveted 'best multiplayer game' title.

I think it is a much bigger task than many really consider, and in the time it would take to create a decent MP-oriented game, the devs could probably make a single player game as strong or better than what they could have done otherwise, without having to worry about whether or not there would ever be a playerbase big enough to keep it alive for any length of time.

Why waste the time of making M&B multiplayer?

IF it does go multi player it will definatley be M&B2

if M&BII ever goes multiplayer, it would make for some interesting clan wars  where strategy might actually become decisive , instead of who has the best spells. because everything has his weakness and strength in this game.

once M&B is fully released, with the $25 price and all, it could then be modded like GTA VC for multiplayer. If you want multiplayer, make a mod for it. Don't go demanding from the devs, go ask on the mod forum. If some one wants multiplayer so much, go modify the game so you can have multiplayer. Don't expect them to modify the game to your liking.

What i'd be interested in is just having a multiplayer arena to fight in. It wouldn't be as hard to code as the full game in multiplayer. It would be interesting to see what form the combat takes, and watch the evolution of much more subtle strategies when it comes to one on one fighting.

Such a thing would be the best way to figure out how to beef up the enemy fighting AI.

Yeah... that would be nice. But now you gave people something to beg about. prepare your self! Here come...

THE TOPICS OF MP!

*screams heard in distance, a woman fainting, guns firing*

No-one is begging for multiplayer as far as I can see and no-one is demanding anything from the devs.

But... the suggestions forum is for sugessions. A lot of them make sense and are good ideas. Some of them are doable others are not. Some of them are plain silly. Some you will agree with, some of them you will disagree with.

It's a forum - a place to discuss ideas.

I think multiplayer M&B would be a fantastic game - much better than a campaign driven game.

That's my opinion.

Fine disagree with me, tell me it can't be done, tell me it won't be done, tell me it shouldn't be done.

That's your opinion.

I say it could be done, and it should be done. It's not a demand... it's an opinion.
